Now Cydia is giving me mad greif. Anyone else having troubles?

    • Dale says:

How long should it be on the “running” screen?

      • admin says:

If you see GeoHotz face appear on your iPhone than it’s working. it doesnt take long. So if your waiting and waiting and u still see the USB cable and itunes screen, then it didnt connect. Check the updated post

      • bob says:

        19 hours

    • Cruz says:

Tried about 20 times did not work until i turned off passcode on iphone.

    • Ernie says:

I agree with a lot of folks here, this does not work anywhere near as well as advertised. I too will wait for RedSnow.

    • t0nm0y says:

      Finally Done it…

Thanks to GTI…just followed ur instruction + a little bit…

here u go boys and girls

Your suggestion works like a charm…I have been doing this thing for the past 2 days and finally got it to “RAIN”…

Here’s the step the I used:

      1.Turned on “Airplane mode”
2.Make it Rain (stuckon running mode)
3.Unplug the USB cable and press Home and power button until it turns off.
4.Turn it back on and then turn off “Airplane Mode” and Turn of “Wi-fi” as well.
5.Make it Rain again and it did make it “RAIN”

      Thanks a lot to all

      • Just a Guy says:

Totally Awesome! Worked for me too… UNBELIEVABLE!!! Thanks

      • guy123 says:

I just let it sit on running, and it worked after like 2 minutes. Then it comes up with a ‘done, waiting for reboot’ for another 2 minutes. Then it works.

      • Brian says:

        IT STILL DOESNT WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • d says:

        Doesnt work

      • yussuf says:

what am i supposed to do if i am at activation screen

    • smellyfingers says:

i tried countless times until it worked. for those of you still having difficulties, try this one alternative step.

right click on blackra1n.exe and click on “Run Vista executable”

      worked first time after that.

      • smellyfingers says:

oh and i’m running windows xp service pack 3.

      • Mateo says:

I have a solution for one mroe problem when blackra1n freezes. Just right click on blackra1n.exe then properties and on the bottom just click unblock and it will work just fine

      • butzman1 says:

This is true. Don’t run in XP compatible mode. I tried for hours until I saw the above post. Run in Vista and you will have no problem if it did not work before!!

      • Point says:

best solution 😀 , run in vista mode + right click application->properties->unblock
        Thanks!

      • Shereef says:

        Cute

    • Jono says:

I too tried like 10 times, then what i did was once it was running I held home and power for awhile until geo’s face showed up, and it worked

      1) When stuck on running after the reboot
HOLD home and Power until his face shows up
(the phone will sound like its restarting a few times)

    • Maurice says:

Hey, I’ve had problems with this twice, and what I did to fix it that I haven’t seen is this.

      1. Push CRTL + SHIFT + ESC ( launch task manager )

      2. Find explorer.exe then right click and select “End Process Tree” this will kill EVERYTHING.
      3. File new task run, “C:\blackra1n.exe”

Did this on Windows XP SP2, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, administrator and Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode.

      • Travis says:

Had loads of trouble with jailbreaking. Tried to follow several instructions from the web, but these steps worked a treat! Thanks Maurice!

      • J-Rod says:

This one worked for me, i tried every other thing a thousand times and nothing worked, this did it first try! thanks maurice and thanks geohot for this awesome jailbreak! this has been a long time coming!

      • bee says:

      • Chester says:

Maurice, you are genious. It works!!!

      • Johny says:

I did all that but when I clicked black rain it said “ASL.dll missing” and now nothing shows up on the screen, do to the END progress tree I’m guessing. How do I return everything to normal?:'(

    • Evandu says:

For those whos having problems, i used winxp turned on flight mode, unblocked blackrain, made it run as a win 95 and as adm…. it only worked this way

    • Entaum says:

One tip for the people who are getting stuck at “Recovery Mode” Screen after running Blacra1n: there is no need to restore your phone on Itunes, to kick it out of recovery mode you just need to open QuickPwn (yes the old jailbreak one) and hold the HOME and POWER buttons at the same time. This will kick your device out of recovery mode and your phone will boot up normally.

      • PRsaiyan says:

Yo, thanks a lot with this…. i was sweating bullets for a second. Now, if i can just get passed the black screen I would be good.

  2. soiramk says:

Ok I have been successful to the applying cydia aspect but get lost after. Here is my questions (1st time jailbreaker so be nice):
        – How do I reboot my Ipod Touch 32Gb?
        – Can I ever use Itunes?
        – How to I add apps?
        – Is there a program that is better than Itunes to add songs and apps?

        Thanks

  3. GB says:

iPhone 3G 8gb 3.1 firmware. Tried your suggestion, but same result. I also tried disabling the firewall and shutting down antivirus. Here’s the blackrain log:

    • GB says:

I finally got it to work. On an XP machine, I ran Blackra1n from the c:\ root directory as an admin user. I tried using Win95 compatibility and for some reason it worked.

I had also killed itunes.exe, iPodhelper, iPod services in the task manager.

Once it started, it went very smoothly, installed Cydia and everyhting looks good!

  4. eric says:

my problem is it says jailbreak is done, donate, wait for reboot, 20 minutes later no reboot and phone just shuts off

    • admin says:

did it show the blackra1n splash screen when it was running? If not then it never made it through. It will say it’s done whenever the iPhone turns off, it doesn’t actually know if the jailbreak was successful. It’s just guessing it was because your iPhone shut off.

      • msmug says:

my phone does the same thing as eric’s.
i get through to the point where it says “done, wait for reboot.”
and i did see the blackra1n splash screen.
but the phone has since shut off and is not starting back up.
        what do i do now?

      • rissa says:

sameeee.my phone just shuts off like that. and i can’t manage to on it back. but everything works on well before that. it was supposed to reboot.

      • rissa says:

sigh..everything goes on so well. till step 8 everything did turn up. till done wait for reboot. and i was waiting so long and it has no respond. even i press on the power and home for so long also got no respond. now have to go to itunes to restore to factory settings. sigh 😦

  5. GB says:

Forgot to mention, I tried on an XP machine and Vista-32 machine, same result.

  6. eastflow says:

I still get stuck on the ‘running…’ screen. I’ve closed all iTunes stuff and moved he blackra1n.exe file to C:\

    What should I do?

    • admin says:

are you running Windows XP? Vista? 7?

Did you right click and choose “Run As Administrator” or “Run As..” and then enter in the Administrator credentials.

  7. Durrel says:

Still doesn’t work after i followed your instruction. Any suggerstions?

  8. chase says:

ill put a “thanks to cydiaupdates.wordpress.com” for finding this trick 🙂

  9. Bruce says:

Iphone will not reboot after install Please Help

  10. Bruce says:

Iphone will not reboot after Blackra1n install can not get this work Please Help

    • admin says:

do you see the splash screen on your iphone of GeoHotz face when it installs?

      • Zahra says:

Help I saw the face and then it doesn;t reboot. It’s been hours. HELP. 3GS I need my phone. I turned it on and off and an apple appears for 2 sec and than it is black. One time a itune wire appeared, now it is the apple again. HELP

      • guy123 says:

I don’t. It just sits on done, waiting for reeboot

  11. Shade says:

    No way. Same error…
    WinXPSP3, iPhone 3G, 3.1.2

  12. scholls22 says:

Thank you so much! I have tried every f’n trick out there and I think you just gave me the answer!

    • admin says:

Can you describe what you did, might help. Maybe I missed something for everyone else. It seems only a handful are getting this trick to work.

  13. Bill says:

    No dice…

  14. iName says:

still not working….i stopped all itunes process but i cant stop the”apple mobile device” process because then the iphone wont be detected in blackra1n.

  15. ab03 says:

Still not working for me. How long did you leave it on “running” before something happened?

  16. Sina says:

Still stuck at itunes logo screen once i restart it it says jailbreak complete but no blackra1n icon

  17. eli says:

    thanks!!!

It was driving me mad your solution worked!!!

  18. Scott says:

    No dice. Log always shows:

    ioctl: 0
    INFO: command geohot sent
ERROR: usb open failed while sending payload
ERROR: usb open failed while sending payload
    send picture: -1

And I just get the normal itunes usb pic instead of geohot’s lovely mug. Lot of other people reporting the same thing. Unfortunately, reporting it via twitter, tough to follow with all the other tweets on the subject.

Seems like for 3G blackra1n is a bit iffy.

Oh well, at least it’s easy to get back to 3.1.0 … only problem is, I have big problems with the phone not coming out of sleep and was hoping to get 3.1.2 to fix.

    • CydiaUpdates says:

hmm. It’s just weird because I had the exact same problem until I did these steps. Perhaps there is a iTunes or Apple service you are disabling that needs to stay on in order to connect. Try my new “Step 0” from the updated post.

      • Scott says:

Tried step 0 … still same thing. Just ending process tree on ituneshelper, itunes, and ipodservice. Assuming that ending applemobiedevice would cause no communication, so I’m leaving that.

    • gti3993 says:

      Fixed

  19. MF_Bra says:

Did everything. Running Vista, compatibility mode, drive c:\, killed all apple process and it stucks in entering in recover mode, the phone show the itunes recover screen and nothing. I´had to recover the phone to make it work again. No jailbreak at all. Tried 6 times… I´ll wait for redsnow !

    • CydiaUpdates says:

Did you try the new updated steps? Avoid killing any apple service that might be required to communicate with the usb connection.

      • MF_Bra says:

Not yet, Just finished to retore it (3 restores in a day is enough for me), any coment about itunes version ?

I´ll wait to see higher sucessful rate to try again.

        thanks

      • MF_Bra says:

Ok, i gave up and tested again. All updated steps, no sucess at all.

  20. HEEEEEEEEELP says:

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP it appears the geohot image but my iPod touch dnt turn on, i tried like 4 times i have to restore iPod when i finish

    • CydiaUpdates says:

So geohotz mug appears and blackra1n says its running? it should take about 30-60 seconds sometimes longer. the phone should automatically reboot. if it does not, and u’ve waited for some time, press and hold the power and home buttons for 10 seconds. it should shut off. then boot it back up. look for blackra1n on the springboard.

      • shay says:

still doesnt work, did the same as him, here is my error log

it dsnt work, i press home and power but nothing, in itunes says that they found a device in rehab and i have to restore it helpp i dnt know what to do

  24. HEEEEEEEEELP says:

  25. yoyo says:

i tried everything but it dosent work it gets stuck on running. how long should it take im running windows 7 btw and i did evrythin

  26. jusalcho says:

on windows 7 you should use compatible mode with Windows XP SP2 it works

  27. HEEEEEEEEELP says:

when i do all the jailbreak the apple logo dnt appears, i need help please can some1 add a tutorial?

  28. scrapz says:

my phone just keeps getting stuck in recovery mode. Did the instructions, on windows vista. I already have had to restore my phone once. Any ideas?

  29. scrapz says:

Also since I did the restore, and try it again it just gets stuck on entering recovery and then it does nothing.

  30. Bryan says:

Those of you having trouble: try killing the mdnsresponder service as well, that worked for me!

  31. Broken Haiku says:

Everything followed to the letter, no change what so ever, stuck on “running”.

Someone suggested this is a problem with blackra1n on 64-bit Windows, but I’ve no verification on that. Anyone on 64-bit that got it working?

  32. Komosan says:

I totally left itunes on in the background and it finally worked. Seriously tried like 25 times. Did have virus programs off.

  33. Broken Haiku says:

Update: What finally worked for me, was rebooting Windows and trying again.

  34. Hunter DG says:

Must be at 3.1.2 for blackra1n to work – with 3.1, blackra1n kept hanging at ‘runnung’ – upgraded to 3.1.2 and worked like a charm – (on XP, without killing any itunes processes or running as admin. actually ran with itunes open.)

  35. Noremacam says:

On win-7 with an iphone 3g. I tried all the steps, but I still got stuck on the usb-> itunes screen with “running…”.

I tried everything mentioned in this comments thus far, including rebooting my computer and tinkering with services in addition to killing off any itunes related exe in task manager..

    No dice…

  36. Michael says:

Was having trouble until I put the 3g in airplane mode. That is what did it for me. I’m using Windows 7. Running blackra1n as administrator in xp sp2 mode. Would not work until putting in airplane mode.

  37. Pnut says:

If I’m on XP SP2, will it work if I put blackra1n in the C: drive, close out all iTunes processes?

So far it has not worked and I’m stuck in recovery mode with the iPhone screen stuck on the USB/iTunes icons.

Should I just do a hard restart on the iPhone? (holding HOME and POWER?)

  38. CydiaUpdates says:

Which firmware r u running? Sounds like u need to upgrade to 3.1.2 first.

    • Pnut says:

Before I tried blackra1n for the 1st time, I updataed my iTunes to the latest version, then went through the process of updating the firmware to 3.1.2 as well as the carrier update.

I had killed mDNSresponder, iTuneshelper, and I believe it was called iPodservice from Task manager.

I killed AppleMobileDeviceService but when I ran blackra1n, it did not recognize my iPhone was connected. Once I reconnected and left the Service on, blackra1n ran, but got stuck at the Running screen with the USB/iTunes image on the iPhone.

      • Pnut says:

This is what I get in the log:

INFO: welcome to blackra1n for windows
        INFO: loaded dll at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\iTunesMobileDevice.dll

  39. Michael says:

Do you have phone in airplane mode?

  40. JOsh says:

In airplane mode, windows 7, running as XP service pack 2 (and have tried sp3), killed ipod services, itunes helper, msdnresponder, moved to root of c, no dice.

    Should have waited I guess.

    • JOsh says:

      Success finally!

This is what I did for iphone 3g, win7. Put blackra1n in c://

      kill ituneshelper.exe

leave everything else as is. Turn off your phone. run blackra1n as admin, nothing else. Click make it rain. Then hold down both the power and home keys. When you see the apple logo release the power key, keep holding home till you see geo’s face. Let it do its thing.

I’m not sure if this actually fixed anything, or if anyone else’s voodoo is doing something or if occasionally it just works and then people post what they did and everyone thinks its a clue.

Just another method for you to try, its what worked for me after trying 20+ different things and multiple attempts at each.

Good luck, I think that and persistence are the key things needed to make this work.

      • Pnut says:

Wow! I can’t believe it! I did what you said and I now see George’s face on my iPhone…….. it is currently rebooting!!! Lets hope that is all that is needed!

      • JOsh says:

Glad to hear it worked Pnut!

      • Gdog says:

This worked for me, i’ve tried everything else, have gone through about 1000 comments on multiple sites. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

      • msmug says:

i was having similar issues so i did everything you suggested. but the phone keeps getting ‘stuck’ after i see the blackra1n screen and it says “done wait for reboot.”
but the phone never reboots. it just shuts off. if i try to turn it on, i see the apple logo for a few seconds before it goes black. help?

      • CydiaUpdates says:

msmug, try doing a hard reset.

If iPhone won’t turn on, or if the display freezes or doesn’t respond
Press and hold the Home button below the screen for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
If that doesn’t work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/ Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, and then drag the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
If that doesn’t work, reset iPhone. Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

      • msmug says:

it still says “done wait for reboot.” should i disconnect before trying the suggestions?

      • msmug says:

when i hold the sleep/wake button, i never see the red slider bar.
the apple logo just keeps coming on.

When i try to reset the phone (home/power” button for 10 seconds, the apple logo comes on and off and on and off again.

i’ve tried to rerun blackra1n several times. i hold down the home/power buttones until i see the apple logo. then i let go of the power button until i see blackra1n. everything occurs as it should. except that my phone never reboots.

Is it coz I dont have the latest itunes version?
What could i be possibly doing wrong?
        I have a 3g + win7.

        Thanks for your help.

      • MOAIS says:

This worked for me too…. Tried everything above in this and other lists. Thanks, JOsh!

      • DJ says:

this definitely works! had to do it twice. you really have to let go of the power button right when that apploe logo shows.

      • e. says:

This totally worked for me – Josh you are the man!

I tried everything else and this did it! Don’t skip this one! It took me two times to get it right – good luck!

      • TheSwede1970 says:

That actually worked for me too, thanks Josh

      • Paul says:

JOsh you are a star, thanks matey you have put one big smile on my face again.
        Cheers Matey.

      • sk8inforfood78 says:

Thanks Josh! It seems like the big kicker was running Vista and running it in compatibility mode. I tried various things while running in compatibility mode(windows xp sp 2, and win95 and neither worked). Using these steps and then running it in no compatibility mode, strictly vista run as administrator did the trick.

      • Jay says:

JOsh, your a life saver. I have tried all other steps posted everywhere several times and even tried a few of my own ideas… but yours worked like a charm the first time!! You saved my iphone which almost went flying!!

dude u freakin rock!! ur advice is the only thing that worked for me!

I use the blackra1n to JB my iphone 3.1.2 with the firmware: 05.11.07, I go through all the steps, Geo’s image is shown on the background of the iphone and then reboots, but after rebooting there is no Blackra1n icon. This is done on windows Vista home premium with iTunes 9.0.1.8

any suggestions would be really appreciated.

  44. Alex says:

    Just an update,

I did the following in a second computer running windows xp:

    1. a clean 3.1.2 install as a new iphone
    2. unchecked automatic sync
    3. closed itunes
    4. run blackra1n
    5. wait for reboot
    6. Done!

it took me 6 hours, someone with a PhD, a donkey could have done better than me!

  45. Flip says:

so , like some others suggested… just keep trying.

Heres how it worked for me, after a few tries.

1 – Make sure itunes isnt running.
2 – make sure you end the itunehelper.exe process
3 – You must have the latest version of itunes.
4 – I ran mine on Windows 7 , 64 bit, from the C:/ directory , and ran as admin under xp service pack 2 compatability mode.

I mustve restarded 5 times or so, til it finally worked.

  46. decimusmaximus7 says:

I did everything suggested on this thread and I was still stuck with a black screen (I never saw geohot’s picture) and with the blackra1n program saying completed and waiting to reboot. At this point I changed usb ports and then I saw geohot’s picture and everything is working great.

  47. TnT says:

I’ve tried every thing mentioned then some to JB my ipt2 that had 3.1 (out the box) updated to 3.1.2 Tried 3 different computers 3 different operating systems Win7, Vista and XP and still get the same result. I get Gehot’s image then it hangs on reboot and just sits there. Cant even restart have to restore. Disabled all or parts of Itunes processes nada. I’m at a lost.

  48. JOsh says:

This is what I did and it has now worked for 2 people that were having troubles. It may or may not work for you, but it is worth a shot.

    1. Restore your iphone 3g to 3.1.2
    2. Close Itunes
    3. Turn off your iphone
    4. Kill ituneshelper.exe
    5. Download blackrain, move it to the root of your C drive.
    6. Run blackrain.exe as administrator, nothing else needed
    7. Click make it rain
    8. Hold down home and power button, as soon as you see the apple logo release the power button, continue to hold the home button.
    9. Release home button when you see geohot’s picture.
    10. Let it do its thing.

Again, maybe it was just luck that this finally worked for me, but it worked, and after posting it another person had confirmation of it working for them. Give it a shot if you have been having trouble.

    • Dinesh says:

Thanks a lot JOsh!I did that method on two of my iPhones and they both worked flawlessly!

I’m running Windows 7 32 bit incase anyone was wondering.

    • Joe says:

This worked. I looked through tons of stuff and this worked.. it seems to bypass something that it just couldn’t get through. Thanks a lot.

    • SoulDiver says:

Sooo Holy sheaat!! My first jailbreak!!! Finally!! I feel like a fukin jailbreak expert now after all the hours of research to finally find the perfect jailbreak recipe!!!

So here it is,,, JOsh got it right but I stumbled upon another step and wooopppeeee it worked!!!
I’m running vista ultimate 64 bit, ESET smart security (disabled all antivirus, firewall and even anti spam)
new iphone 3gs that had 3.11 5.11.07 out of the box, Upgraded to 3.12 current att service.
      Latest version of itunes.

      Ok, JOshs’ method:
**disable all anti virus, firewall and even anti spam** (Not sure if that helped, but part of my solution so maybe a key?)
      1. Restore your iphone 3g to 3.1.2
      2. Close Itunes
      3. Turn off your iphone
      4. Kill ituneshelper.exe
      5. Download blackrain, move it to the root of your C drive.
      6. Run blackrain.exe as administrator, nothing else needed !!** I did not put program in winxp compatibility mode**!!
      7. Click make it rain
      8. Hold down home and power button, as soon as you see the apple logo release the power button, continue to hold the home button.
      9. Release home button when you see geohot’s picture.
      10. Let it do its thing.

**11.** I had to turn the phone off complete ly by unplugging USB cord. (Note Blackra1n is still running in the background)
**12.** Plug it back in and repeat step 8.
Geohots face came up and it rebooted!!
BoooYaaaa!!! Finally no more itunes restore.

So, can someone please give me some links for the must have apps and what to do’s with my paroled phone? I’m gonna give 91 pc suite for iphone a try. Don’t care about unlocking. Tethering, 3g unlock and config/functionality apps are of interest. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks to GeoHot and JOsh for popping my jailbreak cherry!! 😉

Wow–finally this worked for me. I was having the same 3g problems as everyone else, despite trying all the tricks listed above. The difference for me seemed to be having the phone off when I ran blackra1n and clicked ‘make it rain,’ then following step 8: holding Home and Wake/Sleep button until the Apple logo–release Wake/Sleep and keep holding home button until geohot’s pic shows up. Then release the Home button, and wait for it to finish (took about 45 seconds and then the phone automatically restarted). Thanks SoulDriver!!

I can get my Ipod touch(says on his site that black ra1n works with touch.) to his face, and I’m told Done, “please wait for reboot”. My screen goes black and wont start up, also holding the home and other button, and nothing happens.. Is their an fix for this? Or am I out of luck?

    Help Please.

I bought iphone 3G 8GB and succesfully JB and work fine with ultraSnow install for carrier unlock.

and i accidentally update to 3.1 and my carrier cannot detect anymore.

and i try to downrgrade to 3.0 using method from saurik.com and it work but it upgrademy bootloader to 6.4 and my firmware to 5.11.07 and my carrier still not working.

can i get my carrier working fine if i upgrade to 3.1.2 and JB with blackra1n.?
and where to get 3.1.2 is it from itunes or from another sources.?

    tq in advanced

    • CydiaUpdates says:

If you not NEED the unlock than yes, upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes. But if you NEED to have your phone unlocked for carriers than do not upgrade and wait until redsnow comes out

    • JOsh says:

There is no unlock if you updated using an official firmware at this time. Unfortunately you will have to wait and hope there is a fix later. What happened is your baseband was upgraded along with the firmware, there is no downgrading your baseband at this time. Sorry to break the bad news to you.

  51. Os says:

I followed every single advise and nothing works… it keep telling me that is done but I have to reboot phone myself… antivirus is off, firewall off, all apple applications running have been disable (except AppleMobileDeviseService.exe becuase without it, blackra1n.exe will not detect iPhone… any other ideas???

  52. Happy-i-am says:

Running it again does not do anything for me. It says waiting for phone. Very weird indeed.

    • AnalogArsonist says:

It says waiting “waiting for phone” because your phone is still in recovery mode. Hold the power and home buttons together until the phone does a hard reboot.

  53. AnalogArsonist says:

Maybe try downgrading to 3.0. Then restoring back up to 3.1.2 …Then, download or sync over an app. Then backup and restore from backup. I don’t know…just a thought

  54. ShadowPrince says:

  55. Happy-i-am says:

    @AnalogArsonist

    Still doesn’t work.

  56. CydiaUpdates says:

    Happyiam, try a hard reset

  57. Happy-i-am says:

Ok just restoring my touch, then will try that after running blackra1n again. If it doesn’t work this time I’m giving up, about the 100th time… lol

  58. Happy-i-am says:

Nope doesn’t work. I can’t get past a black screen after this picture shows. I have tryed running blackra1n again, holding the home button for more then 6 seconds. And so fourth. The only way I can get out is by restoring via itunes.

  59. Happy-i-am says:

Just saw this comment on blackra1n blog.

“Geohot just realized that IPT 3g 8GB is different to the 3g ipt 32 and 64. so it looks like we’ll just have to wait…”

    By Bradley

Not sure if its true, but it explains why it isn’t working. But I couldn’t find anything on the blog or website other then that comment.

  61. CydiaUpdates says:

If your model starts with MC it WONT work. MB apparently is in the clear.

    • Jeff says:

      ****NOTE****

This method DOES work for MC models! You just have to run blackra1n one more time after it reboots into recovery mode. I have a 32gb MC model, just follow the steps above, and use blackra1n to boot your ipod into ‘normal’ mode. This way of jailbreaking is called “tethered”. Which means you’ll have to use blackra1n to get out of recovery mode every time you cold boot the device.

      • Mathieu says:

Hey Jeff, what did you do to jailbreak it? I got the same model (ipod touch 3rd GEN 32GB MC MODEL) and I’ve tried all the tip on this pages…. still dosent work: stuck on “running”, tried home+power trick = restart ipod normally. If I let the blackra1n on “running” if finally finish after maybe 30min but ipod restart normally, no geohot face nor cydia…. running on win7, tried compatibility XP SP2, SP3, 98, 95, killed all ipod and itunes stuff… even tried to kill explorer.exe before. firmware 3.1.2

        thx

      • Mathieu says:

maybe I should restore it… I just bought it and itunes updated it to 3.1.2 but tried about 1 millions of times to jailbreak with blackra1n, is a retore would help? do I have to backup data? thx

  62. Happy-i-am says:

Yes I saw, my dam thing is MC. Bugger. lol

  63. ipt3g says:

Tried with ipt3g 32GB (MC) model. Does not work… stuck in recovery mode.

  64. Happy-i-am says:

I thought only the 8GBs MC wouldn’t work? Guess you will have to wait just like me =] Or just keep trying.

  65. Ryan says:

I ran the jailbreak with no problems. It installed black rain I then installed cydia. My problem is NONE of the tweaks, programs, anything from cydia are working. 5 row dock, any theme from winterboard, and now most iphone apps wont load. facebook for example. Any ideas on what happened?

    • CydiaUpdates says:

      weird. they should all work.

The first time i installed cydia AND icy at the same time with blackra1n and cydia did NOT like that too much. You might have to restore and then re jailbreak and only install cydia. then make sure you do all your cydia updates.

      • Ryan says:

yep…I just realized I got greedy when I ran black rain. I never tried rock before. I was curious! ha. well I have restored. Now I am restoring my backup. I will then do as you said.

btw, the trick on win 7 is cool but it wasn’t necessary for me. I ran it from the desktop without the winxp switch and it all worked perfectly.

  66. robert says:

    still not working for me
using vista and just stays stuck on entering recovery
have tried all the hints above
close processes, use airplane mode, run as admin, run with compatibility and nothing works with my iphone 3g 16gb

  67. Wil says:

Hello everyone! for all of you STILL having problems i have found the solution!!! You need to install LIBusb-win32 ….If you don’t know where to get it…this is how i got LibUsb-win32 download quickfreedom http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?y5ytjc0tfgy and install it….then run quickfreedom and click jailbreak me (Don’t worry you won’t jailbreak your ipod with it) Now click install LIBUSB…after you have installed LIBUSB…run blackra1n again…and it will work…worked for me instantly after have tried it soo many times! OK GOOD LUCK….I AM ON VISTA BTW

    • silencer says:

Don’t do this unless you like reinstalling your OS.

  72. PapaMidnight says:

Hey everyone, I just got it to work on my iPhone 3G running firmware 3.1.2 using the latest iTunes. It was a little lucky I think, but after a few tries it worked. I am running on Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Here is what I did:

    1. Put phone in airplane mode.
    2. Make sure iTunesHelper process is not running.
    3. Turn off antivires/firewalls.
    4. Put blackra1n.exe in C: directory. Now, this actually does not work and will stop responding at entering recovery point.
    5. Right click blackra1n.exe and run as administrator.
    6. While the DFU mode with the iTunes icon and USB image are on your iPhone screen, hold down power and home button until your phone turns off.
    7. Close out blackra1n.
    8. Move blackra1n.exe to desktop.
    9. Turn on iPhone which for me showed DFU mode still.
    10. Rerun blackra1n.
    11. Bingo! Geohot’s face shows up and the complete popup appears on your desktop. Just let it finish.

Again, this is probably just luck that took persistence as some have already said. I don’t expect this to happen exactly for everyone, but if you have my setup it is worth a try. Just keep trying!

    • Josh says:

This worked for me. The only thing that did!

    • pallani says:

I was going to try this. So i set my phone to airplane mode. ran blackra1n. the face came and everything was done.

I didnt do anything special. I just set the phone to airplane mode before trying out Blackra1n’s original steps(important).

      My jail break instructions:

      1. close ituneshelper
2.set the blackra1n to run as admin and windows xp sp2 compatibility mode.

( the step above may not be necessary. It was already set in my computer due to my previous failed jailbreaking attempts using blackra1n.)

      3. set your iphone to airplane mode.

      4. run blackra1n.then make it ra1n.

So in summary, my tip is to set the phone to airplane mode. The process was totaly random. I don’t know what finally made black ra1n work. Airplane mode is my best educated guess.

I LOVE YOU! This finally worked for me! Didn’t shut down my firewall and antivir though, and ran blackrain in win95 compatibility mode both times, on a vista home basic computer. I have an iphone 3G 8GB with all the newest updates (today is nov 22, 2009)

      Cheers

well… it works after i change language to english. I failed a lot of times due to the using chinese as default language?

Here is the solution we’ve been finding, for the stuck running in dfu mode!!!!!!!!!!
I found it after trying to unlock my frkn phone for frkn 18 hrs.

First do all the original steps until u get stuck.
When you get stuck just press and hold down the power button “ONLY” to reboot
When the apple logo shows up, release the button quickly.
After releasing the button, open the blackra1n again as fast as possible and wait!!!!!! the guy pic will show up. ENJOY GUYS

    • Jason says:

      THIS WORKED FINALLY. THANK YOU

After so many restarts and restores this solution finally worked. The only thing I did different was when I restarted I tried to to down the power button only but it did not work so I pressed both home and power to restart the phone. When the phone shut down, I held the power button till the apple came up and I let go then started blackrain.exe and pressed let it rain. Worked fine from there.

    • Rico says:

      THIS FINALLY WORKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only thing different that i did from yours qas i held the power and home buttons and let go when i saw rhw apple and ran blacra1n TWICE while the apple logo was still on the screen. Praise Jeebus

  75. anonymous says:

thanks to geohot for making the blackra1n. if it wasn’t for him, I won’t be able to jaibreak my phone. THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!

worked for me after a day and a half of trying difrent things ! I had to launch blackra1n ( wich would get stuck at the running screen ) then reboot my iphone (8g on 3.1.2, windows 7 64bt) Holdeing power and home, Then run blackra1n again ! hay presto it worked. Good luck and happy hacking peeps.

    blackra1n(C:) stuck on running

    disable itunehelper (Task Manager)

    will try again tomorrow

    ran

tried everything, tried getting on running, then rebooting with home and power button, let go, then run blackra1n again and no luck.

  82. Jlensbo says:

Sooooo, after the jailbreak is successful (by luck, mostly) a lot of the apps no longer work from the springboard. With all the excitement of finally getting the jailbreak to work, it screw up your already-installed apps!
Has anyone started to address this problem?

  83. Abdullah says:

I did all the steps above but it still doesn’t work.
I am on Windows Vista SP2

  84. aj says:

Tried all the updates and comments above with nothing seemed to be workin until I sussed it….

Run blackrain once and you will get “loading…” and it seems stick, simply wait for several minutes, then hold down power and home to reboot (you should get a message on pc that blackrain has been installed, however it will not appear on springboard!!) close blackrain window then run it one more time, this time you will see the face.

  85. aj says:

Tried all the updates and comments above with nothing seemed to be workin until I sussed it….

    1. Run blackrain and “make it rain”. it will reboot the phone and show normal recovery pic and be stuck at “loading”

    2. WAIT several minutes

    3. then hold down power and home to reboot (you should get a message on pc that blackrain has been installed, however it will not appear on springboard!!)

    4. close blackrain window.

5 . then run it one more time and again “make it rain, this time you will see the face and it will install correctly.

  86. bobby says:

ran blackra1n again, now it’s stuck on “waiting for phone” I reboot, same thing. now i have to restore my iphone from itunes because blackra1n seems to not sense my phone. tried with 2 different pc’s. vista/xp. then rebooted. still nothing. heres to restoring again.

damn devteam and redsn0w need to hurry the f up. their version were so much simpler to use.

  87. quickgsm says:

    goood good info thank you

  88. Ryan says:

OK…so now I have restored the phone. It looks like the factory phone. ALL my apps from itunes are now gone. SO I try installing a free one, facebook, and now it won’t load. NO app will load! This Blackrain has really f***ed my phone up! Any one know how to clean out any possible remaining system files that it or cydia may have left behind in my backup???

  89. bobby says:

Ryan, i just restored to my old factory and my last backup, thankfully I backed it up before using blackra1n. I just dont know how it works for some and not all unlike ipwn and redsn0w which had less errors and crashes.

Looks like Im stuck with old factory settings until someone else comes out with a hack or if blackra1n gets updated.

    • Ryan says:

bobby….are you able to run non factory apps? I had the phone JB’d before with NO problems. I ran this blackra1n and the only things that work after PLENTY of restoration is factory apps.

I have tried 3 or 4 simple free apps that worked perfect before and they blink on real quick and instantly close.

BTW…I reset all settings in the phone. NO luck.

      • CydiaUpdates says:

Are you talking about cracked App Store Apps? If so, you might need to install AppSync 3.0 from Hackulous or SinfuliPhone

  90. TJ says:

    Finally it works!
I agree with everything on this article, except 2 things
    1) I killed every Apple process and service other than iTunes, which I left running
    2) On Windows 7, I ran the program in Windows XP (SP2) mode, but instead of right clicking and running as admin, I checked the Run as Admin checkbox under compatibility in the blackra1n.exe properties! That finally did it!

    • ROSELIA says:

THIS IS WHAT RERALLY DOES IT EVERYONE OUT THERE instead of right clicking and running as admin, I checked the Run as Admin checkbox under compatibility in the blackra1n.exe properties! That finally did it!

  91. Ryan says:

CU – NO…I am talking about Facebook, alarm clock, and a couple other random small free apps. I have reverted to a factory restore. NOTHING cydia did worked and then no other app worked so I had to restore to original factory settings. Now texting works and I can make a phone call but no apps work.

Something in the black rain process had rendered my phone dysfunctional. Now that I have restored it is still dysfunctional. Is that understandable?

    • CydiaUpdates says:

This blows my mind that 50% have no problems and another 50% have major problems.

We must nail down the variables.

For everyone that it worked, lets list what iPhone/iPod your using, windows version, current firmware when used blackra1n, carrier, method used to “fix”.

      For me:

      iPhone 3G
      Model: MB629C
Windows 7 and Windows XP SP3
      Rogers 5.0 (Canada)
Firmware: 3.1.2 (Updated from iTunes before using blackra1n)
Fix: Moved to c:/, ran as admin. (so it seems)

  92. robert says:

Did it again with XP and it worked perfectly
    thanks

  93. darksabre says:

I may have stumbled onto something. I was having the same problems as all of you with Blackra1n, stuck at ‘Running’ mostly. I’m running XP SP2 against a 3G 16GB, and shut down all iTunes related processes, plus the iPod service. But no dice, over & over it just hung there at Running.

For some reason I had forgotten to kill the “Apple Mobile Device” service, so for the hell of it I stopped it, and Blackra1n suddenly “woke up” and kinda finished but nothing actually changed on the iPhone side.

I then reran Blackra1n without that service up. But without it running, Blackra1n doesn’t seem to work at all! So I tried RESTARTING the Apple Mobile Device service, and then ran the whole jailbreak over again. It WORKED! I got GeoHot’s face & the icon after a reboot (which it did on its own).

It appears that you have to get everything shut down, then restart the Apple Mobile Device service so its in a ‘clean’ state.

Shut down iTunes, iTunesHelper, iPod service & Apple Mobile Device service. Then RESTART the Apple Mobile Device service & leave it running.

    Hope this helps someone.

    • Matthijs Tempels says:

Ok… this worked for me.. i’ve been trying this as well for a few hours..

Not sure if this is a ‘definite’ fix, but stopping the Mobile Device Service and restarting it again, and then doing the blackra1n.exe right afterwards fixed it.. my 3.1.2 iphone seems jailbroken again 🙂

      Quick list of steps:
      – Phone upgraded using itunes 9.0.1
      – Stopped itunes
      – killed ituneshelper.exe
      – stopped the Apple Mobile Device Service
      – started it again
      – run blackra1n.exe
-> the face, the message, the reboot, done 🙂

    • Ken says:

this worked for me!! thank you VERY MUCH

  94. Voodoo says:

Hmm…done many a jailbreak and one that boasts to be easy is far from it. Wondering why everyone and their f’in grandma can get this working and I can’t. Followed the directions to a “T” and still nothing. Antivirus off, Ituneshelper.exe stopped, running blackra1n from c:\, ran with and without compatibility mode, and followed the home\power button sequence, still gets stuck at running and no pic of the guy who claims this is easy, oh well, it’s fucking Monday, so it’s to be expected!

    • gil says:

agreed, all other jailbreak software i’ve used i did not have any problems with. I only had a problem with the so called “easiest jailbreak program ever”

  95. why says:

this is bullshit the fucking thing doesnt work tried everything you retards said and nothing works.

    • Voodoo says:

Excuse yourself from calling the good people in here retards you degenerate fuck. They too are going through the trials and tribulations of getting blackra1n to work. Take your iPhone, jam it up your ass (with cord attached of course, and see if the jailbreaks works for you then.

    • Malone says:

you mean “ritard” get it right next time

      • hismusicnme says:

…. Actually, it is spelled “retard”. Still was not used here in a pleasant fashion, however it was spelled correctly.

  96. HAMZA says:

MAN , i v got iTouch 2g 8 GB ,im using VISTA , i just opened the exe file and pressed MAKE IT RA1N and it worked, with Framwork 3.1.1 NOT 3.1.2 ,BTW , HOW DO I KNOW IF IT IS ‘MB’ OR ‘MC’???

  97. codeslog says:

had problems yesterday until i read this article.

    Thank you very much!!!!!!!!!

this is what worked for me.

-my computer is xp pro 32 bit sp3, amd 64 bit proc

-Step 0. Ensure that within iTunes you have unchecked “Sync Automatically” and under Edit -> Preferences, Devices, choose Prevent iTunes from syncing with Devices Automatically.

    -killed iPodService.exe, iTunesHelper.exe

    -moved blackra1n to c:\
-ran blackra1n.exe user was an admin

  98. gil says:

after doing it again on a diff pc. after stuck on “running” for a few minutes, i did a manual reboot, it gave me the message “done waiting for reboot” but never saw geo’s face.

  99. sd129 says:

Im just going to wait for redsn0w. This is the worst jailbreaking software Ive ever tried. NOTHING is easy about it.

  100. Matthijs Tempels says:

    Well..

_IF_ it works its pretty easy 🙂
try doing al the regular steps, but just before starting blackra1n.exe stop and start the apple mobile device service (windowskey-R -> services.msc) and then try blackra1n.exe

    worked for me..

    • gil says:

that gets me stuck in “waiting for phone” but here’s one last try for the day and i’ll check back tomorrow

  101. Lindworm says:

heres my solution with 3g at 3.1.2 and Windows XP with Blackra1n.

gave me a pretty good Headache too, but finaly its working.

    – If you have disabled some services for performance that might be your first Problem. I found that Secondary Login (Sekudäre Anmeldung) and Fast User Switch (Schnelle Benutzerumschaltung) has to be Activated as well as the apple Mobile Devices service.

    – Set your Phone to Flightmode

    – Copy blackra1n to c:

    – Kill iTunesHelper.exe in Tasks

    – Start Backra1n with Admin (do not set any compat mode (I’am talking of XP sp3))

    – Make it rain

That worked for me, and the last cliff was to recognize that I shold not use Win95 mode.

If someone started Blackr1n in UserMode and got stuck at DFU Mode Screen heres your solution.

Simply disconnect your Phone, leave it in DFU Mode, Run Blackra1n again in user Mode, hit “Let it rain” and see Waiting for Iphone. Plug in usb and wait for “running”. It will stop there, but now if you Reboot with pwr/hold it starts in normal mode not DFU.

    Have Fun.

    • bob barker says:

s4itok, that was what it took for me. my error the whole time was simplying stopping the Bonjour and iPodService from running under the “Services” tab. did not realize that by checking “Show Processes from all users” in the Processes tab allowed me to end their process. Worked perfect after doing that and the above recommended workarounds. Cheers.

  106. s4itox says:

After about 20 minutes of fiddling I got it working.
    Running Windows 7 RC 7100, 32 bit.

*Made sure iPhone was connected to the computer.
*Made sure iPhone 3G was running 3.1.2
*Ctrl+Alt+Del, task manager -> SHOW PROCESSES FROM ALL USERS.
*Ended AppleSoftwareUpdate thing, mdnsresponder and iPodservice.
*Put blackra1n in C:/ directory, did NOT put it in any compatibility mode.
*Right clicked blackra1n and ran as administrator.
*Locked phone and pressed home button (the battery screen when connected to the computer) and THEN clicked “make it ra1n” while in that screen.

Worked like a charm after that.

    • s4itox says:

Shoot, forgot to mention that I set iPhone 3G to flight mode.

    • cport says:

      This worked for me
I’m running vista and I have an Iphone 3g, i didn’t have to put into airplane mode either, just locking the phone and holding the home button untill geof*#@k’s face showed up worked for me.

    • j0shie says:

After two days of horror trying everything imaginable this finally worked. Thanks a bunch s4itox!!

The key was locking it and holding the home button.

  107. Voodoo says:

For anyone with Windows 7, I had no luck with getting it to jailbreak properly. I used a WinXP machine with itunes, followed Lindworm’s instructions, and voila, blackra1n icon on springboard. So it seems that there is a variation of solutions to this issue with blackra1n. All you need is a little perseverance and patience and another laptop with XP. But again, blackra1n is not as simple (for some people) as the author is boasting. Good luck everyone!

  108. Gerardo says:

still now working here AT ALL… no geohot pictura at all
i follow the s4itox instructions on win xp sp3
and nothing yet i got the ” done , waiting for reboot ” and a black screen on the iphone

    any ideas ? thx!

  109. LexamusPrime says:

BONJOUR!!! Make sure the bonjour service is running!!! I figured I kept getting the same effing problem everyone above had but then it hit me that bonjour HAS to be on in order for the computer to communicate with the device. THIS WILL WORK!!!

  110. okcyde says:

took loads of tries but eventually worked, make sure you end process trees of all the apple services, not just end process.

  111. Cheatsisazn says:

    LISTEN TO ME EVERYONE

THERE IS NO COMPLICATED WAY OF DOING THIS

    1) Download Blackra1n and then REBOOT PC/MAC

    2) Open Blackra1n by “Run as administrator”

    3) Make it ra1n

    4) As soon as the iPhone/iPod turns on, hold the home button until you see geohot’s photo

    5) AND THATS IT! NO NEED FOR EXTENSIVE C DRIVE ROOT CRAP AND ALL THAT OTHERBULL! no offense 😛

  112. HUGE says:

Got this from another site which was the only thing that worked for me:

IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS CHECK THIS IT WORKS FOR ME:
1- copy Blackra1n to c:. no conpability mode.-
    2- kill itunes helper
3- turn off your Iphone /iPod
    4- open Blackra1n as administrator (vista y windows 7) and click \Make it rain\.
5- push home button y and power same time until apple logo appear.- then release power button.
6- keep push home button until george face appear

  113. Mikey says:

Phone gets stuck on DFU screen (as always!)
Do a hard reset (home button plus power button) until Apple logo appears on phone
Click “ok” on blackra1n (it thinks it’s worked but it hasn’t) and QUICKLY run blackra1n again.
Wait for the picture of the curly haired chap.

  115. dpm says:

Alright, so after F-‘in around with this for about 20 minutes, I deduced that the ‘AppleMobileDeviceService.exe’ was required in order for blackra1n to communicate with the phone. As soon as the USB chimes were done, I killed ‘AppleMobileDeviceService.exe’, and it jail broke…

All other iTunes related services and processes were killed prior to starting, I put the phone in Airplane mode and that was all she wrote. I don’t know if this last part had anything to do with the success of this, but it’s just what I did.

    Hope this helps –
    dpm

  116. dpm says:

    PS – It’s a 3G…

  117. I tried all of these tricks, and nothing worked. I did get it to finally work though.

I rain Blackra1n normally, with everything from the “Updates” in the original post. When Blackra1n said it was “done” like normal (but with no picture of GeoHotz) I kept my phone plugged in, closed blackra1n and ran it again. Once I hit the Make it Ra1n button again GeoHotz appeared and it was working.

  118. jimvodka says:

worked after i kill the bonjour service.

but software is wainted for iphone to reboot.. it did reboot and installed blackra1n icon…

  119. Gerardo says:

nothing has work for me i havent see GeoHotz ugly face lol

  120. edsbar6- says:

After several tries, I followed PapaMidnight’s instructions and it worked fine. Hold the power button and the home button after it reboots. Release the Power button when you see the apple logo, then hold the Home button AFTER you hear the 2nd usb connection sound. Sometimes it takes a few seconds longer which is why I think it takes so many tries for us to get it.

  121. adam says:

wow. that was a pain in my ass.

combination of things to get this to work. been at it for at least 8 hours.

    winxp 32bit.
    3g 16 3.1.2

    airplane mode
    killed ituneshelper.exe
used the hold down home and power and restart and dfu and try again and shoot me now and restart phone and hold down home and power then release power at apple screen and geo’s ugly hobbit mug came up.

    many thanks

  122. Ryan says:

I guess no one can help me specifically…

Can anyone who has had the jailbreak “work” tell me if they are now able to use the phone as they should? Are all apps working for you? ie Facebook or any other “legit” itunes app? Have you made cydia tweaks and they are good to go?

    Thanks

  123. Devin says:

I was so frustrated with the fact that I couldn’t get it work after all these steps,

    It just installed now!

    • Franco says:

      Jakub,

WOw, Thank you! I have been at this for at least 4 hrs.. The stopping the ipod service did the trick! The Bonjour Service was left running, as well as the Apple Mobile Device Service. I did restart the Apple mobile device service, so I am not sure if that had anything to do with it as well.. I killed itunes helper.
I am using Windows 7 32 bit, with a iphone 3G, 16GB with firmware 3.1.2. I had a checkmark in the “Run this program as administrator” in the compatibility tab, but did not use any kind of XP compatibility settings.

      Thanks for the tip!

  131. Adam says:

I’ve tried it a good 20 times. this is my situation
    Vista Premium
    Iphone 3g 3.1.2
I restored my phone to 3.1.2, didnt do the carrier update, and didnt do a restore from backup. I put blackra1n into C and ran as administrator. My phone goes into dfu mode and thats where it sits, with black rain saying its running. I killed all the apple/ipod/itunes services, and still nothing. I dont know what i’m doing wrong. I also tried holding down the home button untill his face appeared, but still nothing.

  132. Jt says:

    Ok guys
It has taken me a few hours to get this going…
You have to have the phone in airplane mode and you must run blackra1n as administrator (rick click on blackra1n the “run as”…….
    Run th program twice
    Have fun

  133. Blender says:

iPhone 3G 3.1.2 on Windows XP (SP2) – I too was stuck on the “running” screen even with the above suggestions, but here’s how I finally got it to work for me:

right click “blackra1n.exe”, then select “Run as”

Choose “current user”, but uncheck the “Protect my computer and data from unauthorized program activity” option.

Voila! Maybe try this and see if it helps, perhaps in conjunction with some of the other suggestions (airplane mode, manual DFU entry, anti-virus off, etc). I should mention that my “current user” profile has admin privileges. Good luck

    • PRsaiyan says:

Blender and James, you guys kick ass….all i had to do is uncheck that damn box for protection and frodo came up.

  134. James says:

FINALLY got it working, tried just about everything. This WILL work for everyone, you just have to keep at it. Here’s some info for you:

Tried everything on Windows 7 64-bit. Absolutely would not work.

Moved to a Windows XP SP3 HOME computer. Tried everything. Would not work.

Moved to a Windows XP SP3 PRO computer. Tried everything, finally got it! This is what did it for me:

Put blackra1n in C:\, right-clicked and unblocked in the properties, clicked run as and did the current user without protection. Opened blackra1n. Phone was off. Started with power and home pressed, released power once the apple logo appeared, kept holding home until frodo appeared!

Windows 7 64-bit simply would not work for me. I think XP home has some issues with permissions (can’t run as another user, I think). Do this on a XP Pro computer!

  135. shay says:

    none of these work

  141. allstardanny says:

if you have kaspersky internet security, it will never work, seems that kaspersky sky is blocking blackra1n from accessing the device BOOT.

    HOW TO FIX THAT :

EXITING or CLOSING kaspersky will NOT FIX IT !

in KIS 2010 : there is something called “Safe Run Shared Folder” u find it in “my computer”
copy the blackra1n.exe to that folder and run it..

So i restored and everytime i now try to jailbreak again, it says that it went fine (got geohot pix, rebooted, etc…) but the blackra1n icon does not get installed on the phone anymore.

      Any help ?

    • waanz says:

I think the problem comes from restoring the backup after the restore and before the jailbreak. Restore again but do without restoring the backup. Then it worked nice for me…

Running winxp sp3 with iPhone 3G black 3.1.2

I tried more than 30 times and finally see Geohot’s face.

    The following is my method.
    1. reboot computer
    2. open the following services:telnet, messenger and terminal Service
    3. kill any iTune related programs
    4. turn off/hard reset your iPhone and connect to your pc
    5. run blackRa1n, click make it rain
    6. hold power and home button of your iPhone, release power until you see apple logo. Continue holding home and you may see Geohot’s face.

I repeat steps 4-6 for more than 30 times and finally get it done.

    • Ray says:

your retarded it says make it rain in 30 seconds by clicking one button and it does not work with all people are saying now there saying 3g with 8 gig is not supported I do not believe any of you wonderboy pic does not come up because his program is junk I spent 100 hours on 3 different computers and it freezes at connect to itunes and the other computers it passes that stage and I get a dark screen and no nature boys pic and after 45 minutes the iphone shuts off and I restart and it says connect to I tunes Junk I will wait for rock your phone update for 3.1.2 they have cydia and everything on there I wish I would never have updated my Iphone on Itunes I bought every program on rock and now I cannot use them Also what ever happened to the 2 or 3 other jailbreaks that were to come out within days of each other we get nothing and 50 percent of us cannot get geofag blackra1n to work and people are sending him money Your all F—-D Have a great day

  151. Meteron says:

    @Sun
Yeah I just got done doing similar steps… I managed to restore my iphone from 3.1.2 back to 3.1 via itunes 9 earlier.. and was able to jailbreak after a simple reboot but I was having the coma issue so restored and went back to 3.1.2 and spent a good 3 hours trying to get this to work.
I have a iPhone 3G with 3.1.2, 5.6 carrier (if that matters). XP running SP3
    My steps:
    1) Unplug iPhone from the PC
    2) Reboot PC
    3) After reboot, kill any antivirus program
    4) Right clicked blackra1n.exe (in c:\)
    5) Run As… run as Administrator
    6) Click “Make it rain” (or ra1n.. how ever its spelled). The program will say something like “waiting for iphone”
    7) Unlock the screen on your iphone and get to the main screen… plug the iphone into the pc.
    8) iPhone goes into recovery and blackra1n.exe goes from enabling recovery to running. Within seconds I saw geohots face on my iphone finally.

    Everything went smooth after that!

  152. Cdub says:

    Last Try was:

    1) Restore to 3.1.2 default
    2) Put phone on airplane mode
    3) Close iTunes and all iTunes/Apple processes
    4) I have Blackra1n in C:/, Run as admin and compatible with XP SP2
    5) Click make it rain
    6) Phone goes into recovery mode
    7) Stuck on recovery mode and blackra1n is stuck on entering recovery.

Any suggestions? I also tried the whole button pressing thing with no luck.

3.1.2 Jailbreak on Windows 7 Ultimate Retail

This is what worked for me on Windows 7 Ultimate Retail Release (Signature Edition)

    UAC Turned off.
Compatibility Turned on w/ Windows XP SP2
Ran as Administrator from root of C:/

All iTunes and iPhone processes where ended in task manager. I MANUALLY put my iPhone in recovery mode instead of letting blackra1n do it. Started up blackra1n and ran it. If I got stuck in “connect to iTunes” screen, I would close blackra1n, switched usb from different root hub into another usb without turning off iPhone and restart blackra1n under same settings and ran. Worked 2nd time around.

Jailbreak works fine now, before, same issue as everyone else. Thank you Windows 7, your smart!

  154. MB says:

Ok, this is weird. I had trouble jailbreaking my iPhone 3G with Windows 7. I rebooted my pc and logged into XP SP3 and ran blackra1n. On the first try without doing anything listed in this post, blackra1n ran smoothly. But like an idiot I installed Icy instead of Cydia and uninstalled blackra1n off the phone. I was unable to install almost any useful apps. So I restored the iPhone to factory settings. Ever since then the program will not work. I tried everything listed so far and nothing. At first I was getting up to getting stuck on running. Now it won’t even find the phone and is getting stuck on waiting for phone. It’s weird because iTunes has no problem finding the phone.

I am running blackra1n on my Administrator account. I have every service except AppleMobileDevice and SyncServer terminated. The phone is on airplane mode and the carrier settings haven’t been updated. Nothing works. Also it is an MB model.

  167. Juan Cruz says:

    FINAL SOLUTION:

I just get a secondary flash like it’s going to work and then it goes back to the springboard. I’ve heard from others with the same problem, but no one saying ALL of their apps still work.
Does anyone still have ALL of your apps still working?

My guess from what I can tell reading the comments, you just keep on doin it over and over and over and eventually it works.

Translation form JUAN CRUZ’s post! This is the only method that worked for me in TWO whole days. THANK YOU VERY VERY VERY MUCH! now everybody can try this method.

    FINAL SOLUTION:

1- Unable the itunes option for auto-sync on iphone and close itunes down.
2-Kill this processes: ipod services, itunes helper y msdnresponder.
3- plug the iphone to the pc and turn it off!! but leave it plugged in.
4-Copy the Blackra1n.exe to C:\ and run it (as admin if your in vista or 7) and hit Make it Rain. (note: the iphone must still be turned off)

    Now here the important part:

5- With the phone turned off, push the on and home button until the apple logo shows up. Once it has shown up, release the ON button but DONOT release the home button, keep pressing the HOME button UNTIL you see the photo of GEOHOT, then you can release the button.

    6- DONE!

No other way worked for me until now, the reason is that i got this message on log:
ERROR: usb open failed while sending payload.

I have an iPhone 3G 16GB running on XP SP2 on an acer aspire. Im from Panama!! GreetingS!

    THANKS AGAIN TO JUAN CRUZ!

  185. MB says:

For some reason now, I cannot get past the Waiting for Phone status. I was able to jailbreak it once in XP SP3 but I installed Icy instead of Cydia. After restoring it since, I was getting stuck at the running status. But now I cannot even get past Waiting for Phone and then blackra1n freezes in both XP and Windows 7.

I am really hating this jailbreak. redsn0w and PwnageTool were so much better.

my jailbreak fails every time -.-

  193. AMCOH says:

    I have: 3G, JB, and 3.0.0 firmware.

I have the 3.1.2 restore IPSW, and iTunes with 3.1.2 has downloaded it but not installed.

    Do I:

Upgrade to 3.1.2 then re-JB? What is the best sequence here? Is there an iTunes restore in the mix somewhere?

I’ve tried plugging in to PC, all iTunes processes stopped, ran BlackRa1n from C:\, got the “Make it rain” screen… clicked that, device entered recovery mode, blackra1n said “running” but hung there.

    I’m probably missing something obvious…

  194. narutochaos says:

So after I got incredibly frustrated trying to jailbreak my iPhone 3G with 3.1.2, I did some searching and came up with a fix. Every time I ran the BlackRa1n app, I was getting stuck on “Running…” and my iPhone would just stay in Recovery Mode. If this is the problem you are experiencing, try this:
tried blackra1n.exe like 30 times to no avail then i came across you little guide you made it finally worked thank you >_<

    1. Move blackra1n.exe to your C:/ (Copy and Paste it onto your main Hard Drive)
    2. Check Task Manager for any iTunes processes running and close them! (Control Alt Delete or run taskmgr.exe)
    3. Right Click and under Properties change to “Run in Compatibility Mode” and choose Windows XP. Then Run BlackRa1n.exe as Administrator (right click)

This has been tested with an iPhone 3G and Windows 7 and XP. For some reason this was the only way ti would work. Make sure your phone is on and in regular mode before all of this and that iTunes doesn’t launch (if it does, it wont work). If you still can’t get it to go, leave a comment and we’ll try to help you out! :0

      ok i am running windows 7 x86 build 7600 iphone 3g 8gb with 3.1.2 firmware

tried EVERY trick on this page so far.

copied the program to my C:

      stopped itunes processes

      windows xp compatibility mode

      run as administrator

i have even done the whole unplugging the usb and restarting itunes and restarting blackrain blah blah frekkin blah ad infinitum ad nauseum—-still freezes on the usb to itunes screen.

been trying to jailbreak ever since the night the program came out. not nearly as impressed with Mr. Geohot as some are.

need this jailbreak badly! looks like dev team has dropped the ball, so if anyone has some sort of NEW suggestion i would really appreciate the input…

oh yeah, tried to JB with a windows xp machine same results.

screw geohot and his lame program.

  195. hfng says:

    Finally works!

Instead of airplane mode, I switched to normal mode (with wifi and mobile network on).

I switched off all itunes related processes and msdnresponder in task manager. I left firewall and antivirus on.

  196. ohshitgorillas says:

    So, here’s my weird problem. I’m running XP and a 16gb 3g with 3.1.2.

I’ve been trying to make it rain for hours now.

ONCE, I got it to work. Not quite sure what I did, but when I rebooted the phone… no blackra1n app!

I restored my phone after that and since then I keep getting stuck on “running…”. Airplane mode off, airplane mode on, itunes off, ipodhelper off, ituneshelper off, mdsn off… man, I have tried everything. This is really getting to be a pain. Who can help?

  197. ISOHaven says:

Here’s my deal. I ran blackra1n once and it worked fine. I then installed Rock. WHAT A JOKE!!! I regret installing that crap. So I figured I would just restore from backup. I restored 3.1.2 while in DFU mode then iTunes put everything back from my backup.

Square one right? One would think.

Now I can’t install blackra1n. I get stuck on the Running…. prompt. I tried everything here with no luck. Windows XP SP2. Here’s my log:

Very strange. I have a 16gig iPhone 3g. I attempted every single thing posted on here with no luck…..then FINALLY!!!.

I dont know what i did but this is what i did.

Restored to fresh firmwar 3.1.2. Updated carrier settings.

    Set up as new phone.

Placed blackra1n in C:\ (Due to win 7). set comp as win xp 2. Also set to run as admin.

I right clicked on blackra1n, click on run as admin.

Once it opened up giving me the option to jailbreak it, i closed Itunes – after i synced my contacts.

I unlcoked the phone where it shows the spring board and app store all that stuff. dont think this had an effect but im including it, i scrolled over to page two on the phone. Then i clicked let it rain.

IT went through the process, itunes poped up. i just closed it and let it do its thing. Bam done.

Strange how i was constantly getting stuck at the connect to itunes and then it works perfectly.

Ps – i did not do the alt – ctrl – delete thing, i did not stop any processes.

Good luck folks, thanks again dude for this great app.

Hey Folks lol i’m going crazy have spent the last 2 days trying to restore the phone. I ran blackra1n installed rock then clydia, once clydia rebooted, the phone never actually turns on, all i see is the apple logo, any tips how i can restore the phone lol so i can at least use it?

  201. ohshitgorillas says:

Okay, I’ve done enough at this point to declare that blackra1n DOES NOT WORK FOR EVERYONE YET. NOT just those with MC serial numbers or whatever.

-iPhone 3G 16gb device ID starts MB, not MC, 3.1.2 firmware, everything updated
-AT&T is my service provider so I don’t have any unlocking issues
    -Windows XP SP3
    -latest iTunes

I have tried EVERYTHING. iTunes off, iTunes on, airplane mode off/on, switching airplane mode, holding the home key while the prog says “running…”, running as admin unblocked, blocked, completely resetting the phone, placing blackra1n in C:\, manually disabling mdsnresponder/all itunes related services, leaving some enabled (applemobileservice etc), no password protection….

and so on. I have read through this entire comments page. I have tried everything.

My conclusion? Different things work for different platforms/devices, and people don’t post what they’re running so it’s impossible to determine what’s going to work for you and what’s counterproductive. And the final conclusion is that

running windows XP and an iphone 3g, blackra1n does not work. plain and simple. i’ll be waiting for an update, perhaps i’ll have better luck then.

I should also mention that I did get the program to succeed in showing the picture of geohot “Frodo Baggins”, and happily rebooted my phone to find that there was no blackra1n app installed on the phone.

When it did work, I just ran the program normally, without all the little fixes that have worked for so many people over this post.

And, a suggestion: when you find something works, please post your device and OS so that these things can be compared to one another.

    • ohshitgorillas says:

Update: I tried unplugging my USB external hard drive and using a different USB port for the phone. This made blackra1n say that it was finished and completed, and yet there is no blackra1n app on the phone.

One thing is for sure, this is definitely NOT the easiest jailbreak ever and I probably won’t be pitching in my $5, rather that’ll be going towards some beer to nurse my headache. Mad props to the amount of work this surely took, though.

    ————————————-

Airplane mode is my best educated guess.

    this may help too:

Just b4 I did that I backed up the phone (with the jailbreak intact – 3g, 3.1.2)and then I checked the apps as one final act b4 I hit the RESET button. Surprise, surprise! Suddenly all of my apps worked! Cydia and installous still worked! I didn’t have to reset! For some reason the backup had jogged my phone into working completely!

i tried literally every solution offered (over 30 restores) after getting it on my third try but fucking it up by downloading all three installers (cydia, icy, rock; dont do this). what worked was getting a clean restore and a clean blackra1n. i tried the same blackra1n for 25+ and then got a new one, didn’t use compatibility mode, and i ran as administrator. i use vista home prem. 32-bit on a 3g 3.1.2 iphone. but other way around.

  234. anaonymously says:

also, i didn’t have to stop any processes, and itunes stayed open after my 3.1.2 restore.

ok everyone, I’m a little computer retarded so bare with me. I’ve been trying this jailbreak ALOT!!! I had it jailbroken myself just fine with 3.0 and updated using itunes with “there” firmware instead of the custome 3.1.2 firmware to keep it jailbroken by accident. so….. now I’m trying this blackra1n and I cant get it to work for the life of me!! Everyone keeps getting stuck on the running phase, well I don’t even get that far. It just stays in the initial phase, can’t remember what it says, and the connect to itunes screen even after I change all itunes settings to not sync automatically and turn off all apple services in task manager. Let me give a rundown of all my hardware and steps I’ve taken and see if anyone can help, this is driving me INSANE!!
-I have a 3g MB model on apple 3.1.2 firmware
-Have windows edition vista home premium, copy write 07 service pack 1
-Options in blackra1n properties are as follows, windows 95, windows 98/windows me, windows NT 4.0(service pack 5), windows 2000, windows XP ( service pack 2)and windows server 2003(service pack 1)
-I run blackra1n in compatibility with windows XP(service pack 2)
-In the general screen under properties in blackra1n it says this file came from another computer and may be blocked (I unblock it)
-Have tried putting it into DFU mode, and recovery mode, and restoring through itunes with 3.1.2 custome restore only to get error 1600 or 1603 a hundred times
Have no idea what else to try! Someone PLEASE HELP!Have tried everything you guys have suggested over and over again to no avail! Iphones just plain boring without a jailbreak not to mention not having installous!

  236. JamesBaker says:

I must have tried over fifty times but eventually it worked. doing the same thing over and over again (being the ‘make it rain’ and then switch on your phone technique)

Hey, I’m getting the “ERROR: usb open failed while sending payload” problem I have tried absolutely everything suggested on this page so far but can never get past the “Running” stage in Blackra1n and the standard USB picture appearing on my iPhone 3G 16GB. I have tried around 100 times now on Windows XP, Windows Vista 32 and 64 bit versions and it gets to the same stage everytime. Please help.

      • Shacster says:

Oh well turns out you ca’t downgrade – as keep getting error 1015. BUT…..

This is what I did and it has now worked for 2 people that were having troubles. It may or may not work for you, but it is worth a shot.

    1. Restore your iphone 3g to 3.1.2
    2. Close Itunes
    3. Turn off your iphone
    4. Kill ituneshelper.exe
    5. Download blackrain, move it to the root of your C drive.
    6. Run blackrain.exe as administrator, nothing else needed
    7. Click make it rain
    8. Hold down home and power button, as soon as you see the apple logo release the power button, continue to hold the home button.
    9. Release home button when you see geohot’s picture.
    10. Let it do its thing.

Again, maybe it was just luck that this finally worked for me, but it worked, and after posting it another person had confirmation of it working for them.

    wow grt ,its working man
    thx a lot ……

  246. ladykiller says:

FINALLY! I got it working for my iPhone 3G under windows xp pro 32 bit, after trying on vista ultimate 64 bit for 2 days no luck. Here is what I’ve done:

    1) plug-in iPhone, closed iTunes,killed iTunesHelper.exe
    2) Run blackra1n.exe under C:/
    3) It stuck again at running
    4) hard restart iPhone using power and home button
    5) Leave iPhone off, change to a different USB port
    6) launch blackra1n.exe (don’t click make it rain)
    7) start iPhone pressing both power and home button (I didn’t hold any of these buttons)
    8) when the apple icon shows up, click on “make it rain”

Done, that did it for me, hope it helps someone to make it work

  247. Mikey says:

I have tried every single one of these suggestions and still cannot make it rain.

I get stuck on the screen with the iTunes logo, the arrow and usb plug.

I am running Windows 7 RC.

Should I download a windows xp virtual box? Or borrow someone’s mac and use PwnageTool?

    Cheers,
    Mikey

    • chipped says:

I also tried everything here with Windows 7 64 bit and i finally got it to work by:

      1. Stop all itunes/apple exe’s from task manager
      2. Run blackra1n.exe from C:\ with Win XP SP 3 mode and Run as admin
      3. Click make it ra1n
      4. While stuck on this DFU screen hold the home and power button and dont let go until the iPhone restarts and your back at the DFU screen
      5. Close any blackra1n messages and the program itself
      6. launch it again with as above and click make it rain

      Good luck

I could really use some help. Looks like I got a little trigger happy and ran blackra1n on my ipod touch 8g running 3.1 … now the thing only boots to the usb & itunes icon and itunes does NOT recognize the ipod at all. Does anyone know how I can perform a restore?

  249. SilentCry says:

    100% functionally…
    1) Copy blackra1n.exe to C:/
    2) Turn AirPlane Mode off
    3) If you don’t have runnining ituneshelper.exe than run it.
    4) Run blackra1n.exe as Administrator in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode
    5) Make it rain
    6) Enjoy

  250. Dev says:

ARGH this is really annoying. i hope someone replies with a decent solution.

    i have a itouch 2g 8gb running on 3.1.2 firmware

    i followed the blackra1n instuctions.
blackra1n downloaded on to the computer fine.
then when i click on “make it rain” it goes into recovery mode and geohot’s face come up on my itouch.
then the message comes up saying you have successfully jailbroken your phone (i have not)

THE MAIN PROBLEM IS THAT IT DOES NOT REBOOT!!!
    HELPPPPPP PLEASEEEEE!!!!!

  251. Michael says:

After multiple failures, this is what finally worked for me on an iPhone 3G, Win XP Pro SP3.

    1. Do NOT kill any iTunes software and make sure iTunesHelper.exe is running if it is not already.
    2. Do NOT put the device in airplane mode.
    3. Run Blackra1n as admin.
    4. When stuck at DFU screen, hold power/home button until phone reboots and you return to the DFU screen.
    5. Shut down iTunes when it comes up automatically.
    6. Shut down the Blackra1n window from your first run and run it again as admin.

This worked for me after about 20 failures using other methods.

    • Dev says:

yeh ive done that a million times. all you do is plug it in to the computer and let itunes load up then click restore. if this is the first time then you will have to extract the file. then it will automatic restore.

    • poyan says:

u either bklackrain it again or you restore it from i tunes

  253. This_Will_Work says:

IF ALL THE ABOVE STILL DOES NOT WORK, TRY THIS METHOD, IT SEEMS TO WORK FOR MOST:

    1. Plug in your iPhone
    2. iTunes opens, performs sync, etc.
    3. Close iTunes
    4. Open blackra1n (from root of C:/ – Run as Administrator)
    5. It will get stuck in DFU mode here while “running…” in blackra1n
    6. Close blackra1n
    7. Open blackra1n back up (DO NOT MAKE IT RAIN YET)
    8. Press and hold Home/Power on your iPhone until the screen turns black
    9. Wait a second and turn it on
    10. As the Apple logo comes up, press “make it ra1n”
    11. Wait…

*iPhone 3G 16GB (white back) was jailbroke at 3.0 but then foolishly upgraded at 3.1 Was at 3.1.2 with Airplane mode ON. (I think.)
      *iTunes 9.0.1
      *Microsoft Vista Home Premium
*Blackra1n downloaded from Firefox & saved to C:/

      Here’s what I did: (Our old redsn0w trick…)

      1) Lost a lot of hair. The remaining hair I colored grey (no dye required.)
      2) Ate 30+ tablets of Tums for my impending ulcer

      3) Tried a myriad of the combination’s that you’ve already read by now. -My phone was in DFU mode [connect USB & iTunes screen] several times by this point (but not when it actually worked.)
      4) Went to blackra1n, right clicked, properties, ->compatibility tab, UNCHECKED “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (service pack 2)” -After it had been that way for a while… I also had the security unblocked on the general tab. Saved setting. Right clicked, Run as administrator.
      5) With the phone already ON and now freshly restarted from the above mentioned DFU modes… Was in regular operating mode(ON)… (Had just sent an email/text reply to my future friend (and probably ex-girlfriend, we’ll see.)(Thank you Google Voice.)) Also, I shut down all Apple programs from the task manager. Then, I tried the Old redsn0w reboot trick.

      6) Redsn0w reboot trick: With the phone in regular operating mode (on)… Clicked “Make it Ra1n”… Immediately held down power and home until I saw the Apple logo… Let go of power, -keep holding home… Wait until Frodo Baggins appears with orbiting iPhones!

The redsn0w trick worked very quickly, Just a few seconds, in fact. -If it takes longer, don’t let life pass you by by holding the buttons forever (longer than 10 secconds, I’d say.) Try something else.

Thanks Geohot…Don’t loose the ring… We’re all counting on you!!!

I have tried everything here with no luck. If I run blackra1n Windows XP service Pack 2 (it is the only choice on my computer) it will not even enter running mode. It goes into recovery mode and Black rain continues to sit at “entering recovery mode”. If I run it in normal mode (vista) it will enter running mode and then stop. As mentioned, I have tried everthing mentioned above many times. I have decided it must have something to do with unsuccesful running in xp mode. Any ideas? Thanks

    Hi!

Finally got mine to work on a iPhone 3G! Here’s my settings for VistaX64 users. Am using Ultimate, but I’m sure it’ll work for all VistaX64 versions.

    1. Back up/Sync your iPhone 3G
    2. Do a Shift-Restore to 3.1.2. This makes sure the iPhone is totally wiped and upgraded to 3.1.2, so you’ll have a brand new Factory Settings environment after upgrading.
    OR
Upgrade to 3.1.2, then hit Restore to bring the iPhone to Factory Settings.
    3. Close iTunes.
    4. Hit CTRL-ATL-DEL and run Task Manager
    5. Hit Show All Processes
    6. End ALL processes that are connected to Apple.
    eg, mdnsresponder.exe(Bonjour Service), iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, iPodService.exe, AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe.
    7. Close Task Manager
    8. Unplug iPhone 3G
    8. Save blackra1n in C:\
    9. Right-Click blackra1n and hit Run as Administrator.
    10. hit make it ra1n
    11. Plug in your iPhone 3G
    12. Magic! Your iPhone 3G is jailbroken!

No more getting stuck at the “connect to iTunes” screen. Then install Cydia/Rock/Icy as preferred OR run iTunes and restore to your previous backup. Whichever one works for your first. Enjoy!

    • Dlaniger says:

I was stuck at the recovery screen and blackrain was on running.

close blackra1n and power down iphone.

    Open blackra1n

While iPhone is powered down, switch USB ports

Power it up to the apple logo
    click make it rain

    it was instant.

I tried for hours too with the same stuckness. HOWEVER, here is how I got blackra1n to finally work:

    1. Restore using iTunes to 3.1.2 (from Apple).
    2. When the restore of the firmware is done you will get a message in iTunes to restore your iPhone. DON’T do this. Just shut down iTunes and kill any iTunes processes from Task Manager.
    3. Run blackra1n (it worked for me the 1st time)
    4. Finally, restore your apps in iTunes (not the firmware restore but from your backup.

    Hope this helps…

***Possible Working Solution for 3G iPhone***
I tried just about everything out there over the last 24 hours. I killed processes, ran blackra1n from different locations etc etc but could not get anything to work.

Contrary to a lot of info written.. I had my ATT carrier UPDATED and i did not do this on a fresh phone (meaning i did not restore my phone to a blank iphone with out the box settings).

Now call this dumb luck or whatever you want to, but this worked for me after countless hours of restarting and trying different stuff with nothing working. I followed this video’s instructions EXCEPT at the end where Dre holds down the home button till geo’s face pops up, i instead held the home button for 2 SECONDS ONLY THEN RELEASED! Almost instantly after i released there pops geo’s face and i proceeded to get up and dance. No process deletes, no moving to c:\, no wiping your phone to fresh install, nothing!

Hope this helps at least one person! Video found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8UYSfPEKnQ

  270. Mark says:

Hey guys, just wanted to share my story in hopes that it will help some people.

We have 2 iphones in the house, and I spent about 4 hours trying jailbreak both of them. Both are 3G, running 3.1.2 with 5.5 carrier settings. The first jailbreak took about an hour and a half of trial and error, the second one actually took twice as long to do.

First, the things that were the same for the 2 jailbreaks:

    – in Airplane Mode
    – blackra1n.exe in C:\ directory
    – connected via same USB port / cable
    – all processes killed (AppleMobile, mDNS, ipodservice, even QTTask)

However, there was a lot different about the two jailbreaks. The first one went smoother in that I never had to restore my iphone when it got stuck on “running”, I only had to restart it. On the second iphone, everytime I got stuck on “running” I would have to restore, an almost 20 minute process! I found that if you restart the iphone after this, and it comes back to the recovery screen, just run blackra1n again and if it doesn’t jailbreak, it should at least fix it so when you restart again it will return to the lockscreen.

The first jailbreak, I think it was just a matter of clicking “make it ra1n” then plugging in the phone at the home screen when it said “waiting for iphone”. For the second jailbreak, what finally worked was the “hold down the home button until geohot’s face appears” trick.

I hope this helps some people understand that different methods work for different phones, even models that were bought within a few weeks of each other (as in our case). Just keep trying, and hopefully one will work out for you.

    Cheers

Finally me too got it to work.

Worked on a iPhone 3G both 8GB(black) and 16GB(white)with win 7 ultimate 32bit, avira antivirus no firewall

Here what I did (after the classic sweating about trying and retrying..):

1)Ensure iPodService.exe is blocked/stopped or whateva. along to all the similar apple processes described before. DO NOT kill the appledeviceservice (it is needed for recognising the device)

2)make sure you have updated to latest firmware 3.1.2 with itunes etc etc.. (its preferred to do, but you can skip it)

3)blackrain executable has to be moved on C: put compatib. mode on win xp2 and run it as admin. (right click)

4)it should work with no hassles, frodo img shown and the rest 😉 at least that what I got.

    Hi there,
Having issues with this. I have Visa. I am on 3.1.2 on Iphone 3Gs. Killed all Ipod Services and have phone in Airplane mode.

I have run blackrain as administrator (unblocked it also)

Geodudes faces comes up seconds after hitting blackrain (oh itunes has been closed and I checked that it registered the phone before doing so) its on there for about 5 seconds and the little circle comes up which shows me its rebooting. The screen then goes black and stays black it never reboots.

I unplugged it from laptop and tried to power it on. The phone does not power back on. Tried to do a hard reboot to turn it on (by holding down power and home) to no avail.

I then have to hook the phone up to itunes which says my phone is in recovery mode and I must restore. Then I must restore to factory settings and am back at square one. What am I doing wrong? Any help is much appreciated.

    Good Day Everyone:
I am a virgin at this Jailbreaking things and am wondering the future of my Ipod Touch 32Gb.

I have been successful at the jailbreak (dudes mug appears)and even loading cydia. When I go to reboor I get the Itunes USB pic.

    Am I doing something wrong?

I also have questions regarding life after the jailbreak(1st time jailbreaker so be nice):
    – How do I reboot my Ipod Touch 32Gb?
    – Can I ever use Itunes?
    – How to I add apps?
    – Is there a program that is better than Itunes to add songs and apps?

    Thanks

I’m having a problem with jailbreaking my ipod Touch 3g(firmware 3.1.2). The process gets to the end where it says “done, waiting on reboot”, but it never leaves this screen and the Ipod Touch stays at a black screen. Does anyone have any advise on what to do about this situation?

  282. marac212 says:

I know 100% way to succed in this!

i was losing my patience after like 2 days, and something crossed my mind.. As i was doing hash check on some file i dl days before i tought it could be problem here too..

So.. Save your blackra1n in some folder and go to their site and download new one.. same file i mean..
compare hashes and if it is different like in my case that is reason..

    MD5: 3AD4CF95DB11FC49EFAB098F570A6A99

    hope it helps!

  283. whitecoffee says:

i love you marac. i have been messin with this for 4 days now and the hash was wrong. new file worked on the first try.

  284. Lucia says:

Sorry this is probably a dumb question but what do you mean compare hashes??

  285. Lucia says:

Nevermind my last question. Need to ask something else. I re-downloaded the file again and voila it worked EXCEPT anytime I power off my Iphone 3GS it goes back into recovery mode showing that USB needs to connect to iTunes. How do I fix this issue? This would be so annoying if I forgot to charge my phone and wasnt anywhere near my laptop or a computer at that. For the time being until this is sorted I will remove the jailbreak. I’d hate to be stuck somewhere without the use of my phone altogether.

  286. exomen says:

Incidently…. for people trying to Jailbreak w/ BlackRain a iPhone 3G 8GB it does work. I’d read it didnt.

    1. Perform a backup (SYNC) of your phone w/ iTunes.
    2. Kill all 4 iTunes processes in the Windows task manager (Windows XP or Vista).
    3. Run Blackrain
    4. Click the Make In Rain.
    5. If you get a “Waiting For Device”, unplug your iPhone from the PC and plug it in again. I did this twice, away it went. Apparently there is a “SYNC” problem w/ Blackrain & the iPhone to establish the USB connection.

    6. Follow others instruction. Works fine.

  287. ladbag says:

for Linux users blackra1n doesn’t work with virtualboxes so make sure to use a real mac/windows computer. you will ALWAYS get stuck at running if using a VM even with rc2. I got in touch with geohot personaly about this and that’s what he said. so again – linux users use a friends pc/mac fir blackra1n

  288. Poizhan says:

    – Download and keep BlackRa1n.exe in your C:\
    – Right click on BlackRa1n.exe –> properties–> Compatibility -> check the run this program in compatibility mode for… XP and also check the Run as admin option.

    – Upgrade to 3.1.2 and restore with your latest back up(sync contacts etc etc)
    – Close itunes

    – Go to control panel (classic view)-> User Accounts ->Manage another account -> Create new account -> Select Administrator option and create a new account
    – Click on the newly created account and select Create password to set a password.

    – Shutdown your system
    – Boot your system
    – Login with your new admin account
    – Let the windows complete setting up your desktop

    – Now connect your iphone via usb
    – Right click on BlackRa1n.exe and run as admin ( though already set to run as admin in properties, just making sure.. this is what i did)
    – Click on ‘Make it Ra1n”
    – Sit back and relax.. (you have to click on a lengthy message from BlacRa1n during the process to say ‘OK’ ) GeoHot screen will appear and reboot ur iphone.. after that its all simple.. check ur iphone for blackra1n app..

The blackra1n executable process hangs when iTunes detects the iphone in dfu mode and will open trying to restore it. But during the last step itunes will try to open.. but because of new user, it will get stuck on license agreement page..

  289. Montta says:

Really weird, it worked very well on my 3GS 32Gb for I did it just once. I tried 10 minutes after on my 3G 16 Gb and it doesn’t work. Both are using version 3.1.2. Tried 9 times and it stucks in the “RUNNING” screen.

  290. greedd says:

I came up with an idea and it works for mc ipods..here it is. get all your music – apps – and pics on it first and then install black ra1n….it will work. iv done it
install it and after it loads just install in this order. cydia-installous thats it….nothing else…if you install winterboard it will reboot and stay in recovery mode and you will lose everything….if you restore your backup you will lose everything…best way to say it you will have app store and all your stuff. intill a blackra1n ver comes out its better than nothing at all. I hope this helps alot of ipod 3g users for now. oh and cant rboot or let it die.

    YEEEEEHHHHHHHH ITTTTTSSSSS DOOOONNNNNEEEEE!!!!!!!!.

this was an 8GB, 2G ipod touch on firmware 3.1.2. the computer i used was a Windows XP Service Pack 2.

    ok what i did was:
    plug in the ipod
    cancel sync
opened blackra1n RC1 and hit “make it rain”.
    this didnt work.

so after restoring, i tried again but this time i used blackra1n RC2.
i saved it on my desktop.
    copied and pasted to C-drive
    right click and “run as”
it did exactly what it was supposed to and finally worked after 3 weeks of trying.

(also i am very unlucky with computers and all technology. my friend who is a computer whiz just sat in the room and it decided to work).

    Good luck guys 😉

Given up trying myself , tried doing every combo suggested , went through the comments and tried those as well. Even went to a windows xp service pack 2 machine and tried that, does the exact same thing each time , runs blackra1n , shows geo’s picture , then it pops back out after a minute and theres no blackra1n icon on the springboard, i’m gonna have to wait for something else that will work for me .

    • evilo says:

I get the same thing as Joe. I do everything per the suggested steps and it looks like its working but there is no blackrain.app on the iphone. I have tried it with 2 different 32gb 3gs and neither had the blackra1n app appear on the iphone after the reboot from blackra1n.

Please help, it driving me nuts.

      Thanks!

  298. Kevin says:

I have a iphone 3gs. I run blackra1n and accidently plug out the usb wire while in recovery mode and now the image of blackra1n with the guy in it is stuck on my phone. I can’t do anything to fix this. Can someone help?

    • rexton270 says:

@Kevin : hold down the Power & home buttons for 10 sec (but can be prolonged up to 30 sec), the screen should go black or DFU(arrow & iTunes logo). Then run blackra1n again…

  299. rexton270 says:

So…After my panic that something is wrong with RC3 from blackra1n.com (after reboot/restart it went always to DFU) I’ve read geohot’s note :
“If your ipt2/3GS/ipt3 is rebooting into recovery after running blackra1n, this isn’t a bug. It’s a feature. You need to run blackra1n every time to boot it. This ‘feature’, called tethered jailbreak, is enabled by upgrades Apple made to the bootrom and the fact ipt3 uses nand flash”…
    So I spent 9 hours of restoring & installing blackra1n just because I DIDN’T read !!!
Now with RC3 it was done in less than 20 sec.
    My device & system :
iPhone 3G(S) 16GB 3.1.2 with 5.11.07 out of the box
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32.
    My steps were :
    1) Run iTunes with connected iPhone to do backup.
    2) Close iTunes (didn’t do nothing else)
    3) iPhone is on and connected via usb
    4) Run blackra1n.exe (was on the Desktop, not necessary to put it on C:\,but tick Run As Admin)
    5) click make it rain
    6) on the software window you can see : entering recovery mode, running, done, wait for reboot
    7) look at your screen to see Frodo instead of crApple logo
    8) then screen goes black and pop up appear ENJOY …
    9) now…when it reboots you’ll see arrow & crApple logo – don’t panic.
    10) run blackra1n.exe again to start up your iPhone/podtouch
    11) after this DO NOT reboot or switch off your iTHINGS as you’ll need to connect and repeat step 10 every time when you do so.

Read rexton270 post and combined it with one item and FINALLY got it. THANK YOU rexton270

*rexton270, I will use quotes as they are your words. *

    My Specs– 32 GB 3G[S]- Windows XP Pro/ SP3

    1) “Run iTunes with connected iPhone to do backup”.

    2) “Close iTunes (didn’t do nothing else)”

    3) “iPhone is on and connected via usb”

    4) Run blackra1n.exe (was on the Desktop, not necessary to put it on C:\”

    5) “click make it rain”

    6) “on the software window you can see : entering recovery mode, running, done, wait for reboot”

***6.1.0) UNPLUG PHONE AND RECONNECT. The message will pop up, click ok.

***6.1.1) PLUG PHONE BACK IN, Run Blackra1n again.

***6.1.2) Message will pop up and the Blackra1n box will say waiting for reboot.

    7) “look at your screen to see Frodo instead of crApple logo”

    8) “then screen goes black and pop up appear ENJOY …”

I ran this on my 3G and it ran without a hitch but there seems to be issues with the hang on the recovery screen. I am so not saying that rexton270 was wrong at all, I just kinda scratched my head and said, “hmmm, I wonder if” and it worked. Apple and ATT can Ki$$ my ______. 🙂 Rage Against The Machine !!!!!!!

      ===================================

Ok, so I had to restore the same phone. Worked on it for 3-4 hrs on my computer, (My Specs– 32 GB 3G[S]- Windows XP Pro/ SP3), for the love of God, I couldnt get it.

Restored AGAIN, came to the office, ran Blackra1n on Vista machine…..1st try… it worked. I have NO CLUE, on why I couldnt get it to work at home but the truth of the matter is that it was a different computer. Makes no sense to me at all besides the fact that I have been reading that people are switching computers and it works. I hope they, (Dev, Geo) get all this figured out. Dont get me wrong, I am glad it works. Whew

      Hi Evan, try following:
      1)Do sync & back up
2)Do official update via iTunes to 3.1.2
3)Use Disk Cleanup and restart your PC
4)Switch off your iPod and then switch it on (not just restart)- turn off wi-fi
      5)download blackra1n RC3 from http://blackra1n.com
6)Place the .exe file in to C:/ (however my worked from Desktop)
7)Right click on .exe and under Properties scroll to Compatibility and tick Run As Admin (leave Run in compatib blank!)
8)Now double click to blackrain.exe and pop up saying : Make it rain will appear – don’t click yet!
9)open iTunes and connect your iPod
      10)do sync and close iTunes
11)click Make it rain and let it run
12)you should see “entering reovery mode” – “running”
13)now Frodo should be on the screen
14)pop up should appear saying about donation etc – DO NOT click OK for 5 min!
15)also in blackrain.exe window you should see “done, wait for reboot” – hold on for 5 min…
16)unplug your iPod and do restart – it should go to DFU mode (arrow+iTunes)
17)click on blackrain.exe and connect your iPod. then click Make it rain…
      Hope this help.

Hi, do a clean restore via iTunes and set up your iPhone as new device.Switch off iphone. Then delete blackrain and switch off (not restart) PC for 5 min. Download blackra1n RC3 again and place the .exe file in to C:/. Run the exe file but do not click “make it rain” yet. turn on iphone.Open iTunes and connect iphone. do sync & back up. When done close iTunes and click “make it rain”…

  307. odanhammer says:

What good does it do to turn your computer off for 5 minutes?
Clearly this program is meant to work , however some of us are having problems that don’t involve just doing a clean restore of the iphone and running blackra1n again.
I have tried blackra1n dozens of times in different way to try to get it to work. It doesn’t work for me , i have gotten the no showing the geo picture problem , that showing geo picture but no blackra1n icon problem , the suck in restore mode problem , and even gotten a few random errors while using blackra1n.
Still no jailbroken iphone, and still no unlock.. althought i don’t care about that. Quickpwn or redsnow will come out with something that might work for me soon enough.
But I highly suggest to anyone reading this
Try turning your computer off and back on again , plugging your iphone in , running blackra1n without itunes open and make sure everything is closed down involved with itunes. And if it doesn’t work , go dang and walk away.

It appears that perhaps that the Blackrain developer needs to go back and redo his program. Redsnow worked beautifully “out of the box” so to speak…After reading this and many other forums, too many people are having troubles getting this program to work. I tried it and it threw me into a cd/cord screen…in tying to fix this I was on the phone with Apple for several hours which we eventually did but when trying Blackrain the following day, same thing happened again….went to a different PC, wiped out Itunes, downloaded Itunes and got rid of the 1604 error messages I had been receiving and finally got my 3gs restored. It has been a nightmare to say the least and it seems as if thousands are running into similar problems…pretty buggy software for far too many people

    1.restore to 3.1.2
    2.download blackra1n to c:\
    3.close itunes
    4.run blackra1n as admin.

I can’t put airplane mode on because I have no sim and can’t get to settings. But I didn’t need to do that the first time. I did notice a difference in the log file from when it worked tho.

This is what I did and it has now worked for 2 people that were having troubles. It may or may not work for you, but it is worth a shot.

    1. Restore your iphone 3g to 3.1.2
    2. Close Itunes
    3. Turn off your iphone
    4. Kill ituneshelper.exe
    5. Download blackrain, move it to the root of your C drive.
    6. Run blackrain.exe as administrator, nothing else needed
    7. Click make it rain
    8. Hold down home and power button, as soon as you see the apple logo release the power button, continue to hold the home button.
    9. Release home button when you see geohot’s picture.
    10. Let it do its thing.

After trying all the tricks on this page, you really cant jailbreak the ipod touch 3rd gen 32GB MC model 3.1.2 with blackra1n rc3. Is there a way to downgrade the firmware and use rc1 or rc2 or maybe another jailbreak tool?

    thx a lot

    • Gti3993 says:

Can you tell me what is going on with your iPhone ?

      • Mathieu says:

blackrain stuck at “running”, when I restart the ipod, blackrain says jailbreak done but never saw the geo face and nothing changed in the ipod (no cydia)

    • no_geohot says:

Thats exactly what was happening to my iphone when i tried to jailbreak in with blackra1n. I tried everything. all the steps are useless. It finally worker after I tried about 30 times. I removed blackra1n and log file from my computer. Downloaded it again to my desktop and clicked “make it rain” and it worked. No special steps You basically have to keep trying it til it works. Ya its a pain and you might have to restore it 10 or 15 times.

      • Mathieu says:

you had to restore your phone? I tried about 100 times to jailbreak my ipod but never restored it… it just starts normally.

  320. ZeR0 says:

my itouch 1g 3.1.2.. i jailbroke with blackra1n many times already.. but it still stuck on “entering recovery”.. u guys said set airplane mode but ipod touch does not have.. so wat can i do??? anyone here me?

    • no_geohot says:

thats what happened to my iphone 3.1.2 and thats why I had to restore it so many times, it got stuck in recovery mode. I found out that if it is stuck in recovery mode do not disconnect or reboot device:

      1. exit blackra1n
      2. right click blackrai1n
      3. try a different compatibility
      4. run blackra1n
      5. make it rain
      6. repeat steps until blackra1n says ‘running’

I found the one that finally worked for me was when the compatibility was unchecked, aka default settings.

  321. Simon says:

this does NOT work on Mac Tiger. I tried it 100 times.. But once I tried it on my friend’s Windows Vista, it worked like charm!!!!

  322. Sean says:

    after 300 tries
    windows 7 iphone 3g 8gb
1 plug in iphone while on and at spring board
    2 exit itune (if open)
3 hold down power and home button while your doing this open up blackra1n and make it rain
4 continue holding home and power till iphone turns off
5 turn back on and let the program do it job

  333. Gonzo says:

Hi, I blackra1ned my iphone 3GS, 32Gb, Model A1303, version 3.1.2, the other day and it worked fine. Installed a lot of applications (IPA), Cydia and others. I turned it off, 2 or 3 times, and everytime had to run again blackra1n to start it. But yesterday, impossible to start. The logo of plugin to itunes stayed on display, and no blackra1n image.

On my PC (xp, SP3), the blackra1n programm was stucked on “running”. Tried to unplugged it, the blackra1n said it was done, but nothing happened, always same logo to connect to itunes, turning off and on stayed the same.

I had to reinstall the original version with an “IPSW” file, and it restored as original.

Tried to run blackra1n again as it was a new phone, but still the same, stays stucked on “RUNNING” logo and nothing happens.

    So 2 questions
    1. : How can I get back my blackra1n running again, as it worked before?

2 : If it’s impossible, how do I take off the backup “IPA” files, downloaded by Appulous, and that stayed in the HD of the Iphone (800 MB!)?

Thanks a lot as I tried many things, but nothing really works.

HELP! I’ve jailbreaked mine before using blackra1n. i was using an iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 BB 5.11.07 and was bought in December 2009.

After a few days of tethered jailbreaking and constant crashing, my phone eventually didn’t turn on. As in no itunes logo no backlight and stuff. Tried recharging it overnight on a wall outlet but it still wasn’t recognized and it didn’t turn on. I tried to put it in DFU mode, and iPhone was recognized but when I tried to restore it, it gave me an error of 1601. I tried to restore it on 3 different computers keeping in mind that I should use the back ports of the USB. But no luck. All were PC’s and no macs, so I guess I’ll be trying to plug it on a mac.

When I plug it on a wall charger, it goes to recovery mode, but when plugged on a PC, it doesn’t respond. I also tried to change cables but no luck either.

I’M so depressed! For 2 weeks now, I’ve been trying to find solutions but I’m unfortunate.

I also tried different softwares, like iRecovery, iHackintosh…but I still failed.

    HELP me somebody, please.

Hi guys I am going to solve your problem certaainly with the help of JOSH, there is lots of works and also confusing ,for example some people experience variant and different work for solving the question!but I want to say that all of them do just one thing!and just their vision are different!this is the Idea!firt of all be sure to update your itune to last version 9.0.2 (I think)
    1)restore your iphone to 3.1.2
2)plug your iphone in the pc
3)turn off your Iphone by the upper key and home button!
4)press ctrl+alt+del to go to task manager!
click on process tab and find the itunehelper there!and click end process (just this one)
    5)copy blackra1n in c: drive(be sure it is last version RC3)
6)rightclick on it and chose run as adminestrator
7)make it rain(your phone is still off and so it will not work
8)push both home and power button after a sudden(2 or 3 seconds but dontworry if it takes longer)you will see apple logo so dont push power button any more as soon as you see the apple logo but keep holding home buttone
9)you will see ituneplug but after a 5 seconds you will see geohot picture
10)it done dont worry you can be relax now

hint. this is the exact work and it should work but if it doesnt use another computer with vista windows , I promiss you !

  341. arian says:

mine was already jaillbroken. Right after i bought it, i jailbroke it myself. It worked fine. And whenever my phone ran out of charge, i put back in so it could reboot. Now i just reset my network connection. I Put it in and it keeps going and going till u see a screen of white flash very quickly, shuts off, apple logo shows again, and it reboots again. At the library, i tried downloading it and pressed the make it rain button a lot, because it was not working due to the restrictions placed on the computers. IS thtat a reason y it wont reboot. Help me plZZZZZZZ!!!!!!

      • shawn says:

try this, have it plugged it, close i-tunes when it shows up. Right click on the make it ra1n .exe file, go to properties, at the bottom of the properties page click on unblock. Run make it ra1n now and it should reboot just fine now. if not try rebooting (hold power and home buttons simultaneously) a couple times.

  345. James says:

Help! I jailbroke my phone successfully about two weeks ago using blackra1n. Really all I wanted it for was the internet tethering, and that worked perfectly up until two days ago.

I woke up and went to turn off the alarm on my phone and it froze. I attempted to restart the phone using the whole home/power buttons thing but when it popped back up all I got was an Apple logo. The Apple logo just sits there for a minute, then the little “working…” ring thing pops up. It maybe makes a quarter of a revolution, then stops for several minutes. It then moves again, stops for several minutes followed by a flash of the screen and starting the whole process over again.

I even have tried to connect it to several different computers (one running Leopard…several with Vista) and it doesn’t register on either iTunes or hook up to blackra1n. Any suggestions? Has anyone seen this happen before?

The phone is a iPhone 3G 8GB running 3.1.2 updated before it was jailbroken, and worked perfectly for a while. Please help.

    • Chris says:

      Hi James,

I’m so happy to see that not only I’m having this problem.
      It’s exactly the same thing here with a 16GB 3G on 3.1.2 😦

  346. HELP ME 101 ! says:

OK let me explain this again. I have tried rebooting it. A lot. And every time it just takes really long, then a white flash appears and then it shows the connect to itunes thingy. I have to manually open up itunes since my phone is in recovery mode. Now the reboot always fails. It doesn’t say that but it says enjoy your jail broken phone as it usually says. If I leave it in for a while, their will be a bunch of these messages because Blackra1n tries it a lot. Before when i was at the library, i pressed make it rain a lot. I unblocked blackrain on the properties menu and it doesn’t work still. Is there any other things I could do to make it work ( w/o resetting the whole phone to factory settings)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    2. downloaded Blackra1n and moved to C drive
    3. Opened itunes, closed itunes
    4. Opened windows task manager and closed all programs related to itunes (itunes helper, iPod service, Bonjour etc..) only kept the Apple Mobile device Service.
    5. Opened Blackra1n as admin, clicked ‘make it rain’
    6. Then finally connected the iPhone.
    7. Blackra1n did its job.
Tip: if you do not have a spare pc or a laptop, try deleting everything related to itunes and reinstall itunes and follow the above steps.
DO NOT LET THE Itunes to sync after the fresh install.

I also had/have this problem with my iphone 3gs 3.1.2. After several tries, I did get the phone to boot properly. I’m not sure what it was that made it do it right, but here’s what I did:
I plugged the phone into my macbook pro, and itunes came up with the ‘recovery mode’ message. I option+clicked the restore button in itunes, and selected a 3.1.2 firmware file I downloaded (I don’t want to upgrade to 3.1.3!). Of course, after trying to validate the firmware with apple, itunes told me that it couldn’t install the firmware.
…So I thought I was screwed. Just for kicks, I tried to boot it up with blackra1n ONE LAST TIME….
        AND IT WORKED!

        –However–

It’s doing it again….and the trick that worked last time isn’t doing crap now. I have no clue…

For those who relentlessly get the USB connect to Itunes after running the resn0w… When it is stuck on slide to use for emergency screen limited use after jailbreaking… I found a solution. You must restore the 2Giphone to an older (3.0) firmware first, using the method of restoring with Itunes and pressing SHIFT while pressing the restore button, and when it brings up the options you select the OLDER version you downloaded for the older firmware.
Once it restores it to the older (3.0) firmware you can then run the redsn0w again and choose the same firmware, and it will work this time. I did it every other way imaginable, but the only way it worked was to use the Itunes restore, and restoring to older version.
To do this, open itunes. Hold the Power and Round (Home) button BOTH together for 10 seconds and when it restarts you hold ONLY the HOME button. This will show you a simple USB and itunes logo, which is the restore screen. Itunes will give you the message of needing to restore it, and you say OK. Then WHILE PRESSING SHIFT you select the Restore button, which will bring up the browse box. YOu then find the previously downloaded firmware.
    It finally worked.

My friend and i are running on firmware 4.0 with an ipod MC model. We both have 8GB 2nd Gen MC Model running 4.0 firmware and we have tried every single jailbreaking program including, spirt, blackra1n,sn0wbreeze,redsn0w. Blackra1n was the closest we got to jailbreaking the ipods. Every time we try, we get stuck on the ‘connect to itunes’ screen. I have cut and pasted in C drive, program files, common files, apple apps and i only get to where Blackra1n keeps saying running and then the ‘connect to itunes’ screen appears waiting for reboot, but never follows through. If there are some new ways to ‘fix’ this can someone get back to me ASAP. Thank you

as all the other above me, i tried all solutions out. 3 Days, 3 virtual machines, 3 different iTunes-Versions, many ‘i’-Apps and many many tries later i finally discovered a way that worked for me:
At this time i had an iPod Touch 3G 32GB with fw 3.1.2 on a non-virtual Win7 Pro. I was Admin and had blackrain RC1 and RC2 an my c-drive root (C:\)
1000 times and once i stared the RC1 without any manipulations in his properties (RC3 too) wait a little (drunk coffee) and then started RC3 accidentally.
I spit out my coffe when i saw geohot´s cute lovely face. O.Ó I was never before so happy to see his face. xD

      I´ve got another hint:
If the problem comes up at a reboot after changing the usb-mode of your i-device, try run blackrain without your phone plugged in and click so button. if it says ‘waiting for phone/device’ plug you device in and wait for geohot´s face. 😀
