  1. CydiaUpdates says:

    asy – disable auto-syncing. Here’s how:

    1. Before you plug the iPhone or iPod into the computer, go to iTunes.

    2. On a Mac, go to the iTunes menu -> Preferences -> Devices.
On a PC, go to Edit -> Settings -> Devices

    3. In the pop up window, look for the icon or tab that says Devices. Choose it.

    4. Just below the box, you’ll see a checkbox reading disable auto-syncing for iPhone and iPod.

    5. Check it and click OK at the bottom of the window.

Auto-sync is now turned off and you’re safe to plug your iPod or iPhone into the computer.

      blackra1n FIX!!!!!
      1. Run blackra1n
      2. After your iPod is completely shut off, hold Power and Home buttons together for 10 seconds. IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!! After 10 seconds exactly, release only the Power button still holding the Home button. If you see an Apple logo, you held power too long. The trick is to release the Power button right before the Apple logo would appear, still holding the Home button. In about 6-10 seconds you should see a picture of nature boy. Then your all good from there. If you see the USB to iTunes, something went wrong. JUST MAKE SURE YOU RELEASE POWER BEFORE THE APPLE LOGO APPEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • emmanuel says:

my home button dosent work is there anyother way??

    • Joe says:

This is what worked for me on Windows Vista. I was stuck on “running” forever. After long hours trying to figure out the problem, I finally got it to rain.

If you have more than one user accounts on the same computer, chances are that itunes is probably running on the other profiles. This was why i was stuck on “running”. The solution was go to Task Manager and select Processes. At the bottom of the Task Manager there will be a check box that says “Show processes for all users” or something like that. After that you just look for any process that is itunes related and “End process tree”. After I did that, it rained instantly. This was after I tried all the tips/tricks listed on this site.

    • xxOuchable says:

So I’m gettin perdy frustrated -.-

Sometimes, randomly, after trying all sorts of crap, I see frodo. This has happened a few times, but then after he says hello for a few seconds he peaces the scene and my old friend “connect to itunes” shows up with his punk ass. Whats the beef?

      • jughead641 says:

P.S. This is a brand new iPod Touch 3rd generation 32gb purchased December 26th 2009.

      • Keenan says:

you have a 3rd gen ipod touch which means you have a tethered jailbreak which means every time you turn it off, to turn it back on you need to run blackra1n. and also that itunes logo means it workes but to do the initial boot for a tehtered jailbreak you need to run blackra1n one more time and your phone will start up

    • jughead641 says:

      • DietCokehead says:

That’s because the third gen iPod can only have a tethered jailbreak. Everytime the connect to itunes screen comes up you have to “Make it Ra1n” to boot your device.

    • momox says:

i need help when ever i click make it rain it just sais waiting for device when it does that nothing happens ive tried reinstalling it that didn’t work nothing i tried worked if any ideas please email me at momoxbvr@hotmail.com

  2. CydiaUpdates says:

Also uncheck the Auto Sync pref in the iPhone’s Summary Screen.

  3. pete says:

RE-BOOT YR COMPUTER AFTER INSTALLING BLACKRA1N ON YR COMPUTER. put yr device in AIRPLAINE MODE then PRESS MAKE IT RA1N http://twitpic.com/lbfkg JUST INSTALL CYDIA. i did this on my iphone 3g

  4. Annirowe says:

After reading a hundred different posts the only way I could get it to work was deleting the USB Controllers in Windows and Rebooting. Let it reinstall them on bootup and then try Blackra1n again.

Dont need to worry about all the other stuff if this is your problem. What made me come to this conclusion? I jailbroke one phone without an issue. Tried another one a day later and it wouldn’t work. Check the Log file. It will mention USB a lot.

  5. Ash Haque says:

None of those instructions worked for me, still stuck on the itunes recovery screen. Have yet to see Frodo Baggins on my iPhone

  6. CydiaUpdates says:

    Try ending the process AppleMobileService.exe.

If that doesn’t work then unplugging the phone and plugging it back in. If needed try and run blackra1n again.

  7. 273x says:

Blackra1n didn’t work for me.. So i tried something else… I looked online and googled a bunch of ideas and found a 3.1.2 ipsw that someone made that was jb and had cydia on it.. I put that file in iTunes, then did a restore with that file.. It got stuck in dfu, so I dl’d ireb to work and brown chicken brown cow… It worked!! My iphn3g 3.1.2 is jb’d.. Very happy!!

  8. Carm says:

Okay so I was having this problem where BlackRa1n would show as running, however my iPhone screen was stuck at the iTunes/USB Restore screen. I tried shutting down the phone while BlackRa1n was still “running” then entered recovery mode again and Frodo finally appeared. Not the “easiest” jailbreak.

    • cutekillq says:

i try everythings, shut down computer, shut down iphone, press home+power, shut down itune, shut down blackra1n, and my phone get back to normal old face, and I try JB again, again stuck in “entering recovery…” with itune/USB logo, what can I do??!?!?

  9. David says:

I made a batch program that automates this whole process fro the iPhone 3G on windows xp, vista or 7, just copy and past the following code into notepad and save it as helper.bat

    @echo off
    color 1a

    :step1
    cls
    set /P c=Is your iPhone upgraded to 3.1.2? [Y/N]

    blackra1n says waiting for iPhone..
Turned on iPhone, as soon as it booted it restarted
    seen geohots pic… It then ra1ned 🙂

–Ipod (2g 3.1.2 firmware) connected to usb, but not into computer
–open blackra1n (had to “save as” in programs(86x)/commonfiles/apple/applesupport or whatever that folder is called, then right click blackra1n in there and make desktop shortcut)
–click Make It Ra1n (it says waiting for device)
–plugged in usb to different slot than before
      –the rest is history
      Thanks to everyone!!

      • Ben says:

        10 Tries, wouldn’t work

I tried the above two steps
First kill all apple related processes except applemobiledeviceservice

        1. Switch USB Port
        2. Go to blackra1n’s properties and unblock the crap
        3. Connect 30pin connector
        4. Turn off normally
        5. open black rain and click makeitrain
        6. power on iphone normally
        7. give it a sec, don’t panic when the USB/iTunes screen comes up again. Creepy pic should pop up in a moment. Let it run
        Done

  18. David says:

One other thought for the helper.bat program, right click c:\blackra1n.exe and select properties, click on compatibility tab and check “Run this program as an administrator”. The funny thing is that i DID’NT have to End any of the above mentioned task like ituneshelper , ipodservice, applemobiledevic etc
also i run blackra1n.exe from my desktop (windows xp/sp3)

For some strange reason i believe you need to have the latest firmware 3.1.2 downloaded to your system (you can do this by pressing restore)

Here is the step that got me working

    1)Install the latest i tunes
2)Connect iphone3g click restore ( It will download the latest firmware the 3.1.2)
3)closed itunes , then switched off the phone then switched it back on
4)start blackra1n.exe and clicked make it rain
5)luckily this times fraddo baggins(geohot pic) came to the screen at the same times itunes popped saying it detected an iphone in restore mode i closed it promptly, after a while the phone restarted itself and was jailbroken

      More info:

      I am using 3.12

Sometimes, after re-plugging it, a minute or so later, a notice appears on the task bar saying that there is a malfunctioning USB and that it’s not recognized.

  42. Britt says:

Built the helper.bat file, followed instructions.

On Win7, right clicked blackra1n, chose “troubleshoot compatibility”, put me into admin and winxp SP2 mode for compatibility.

Then ran helper.bat without exiting any of the services (helper.bat does this for you).

Switched USB ports from the front to the back.

Finally after my fourth time running the helper.bat file trying a few different things, IT WORKED. Took a couple hours, so I think YOUR solution may be just to try a few different things until everything finally works.

The geohat picture shows up about 20-30 seconds after reboot, so be patient while holding the home button.

Got it using the following steps:
    1) connect iPhone to USB
    2) open iTunes
    3) backed up iPhone and restored to factory.
    4) after factory restore closed iTunes
    5) turned off iPhone
    6) opened blackra1n clicked “Make it Ra1n”
    7) held power and home button releasing power when apple logo appeared. continued holding home until say frodo.

  48. J CAZ says:

Look, go ahead and delete my previous post and pay attention to this one. The problem lies in Vista 64-bit systems for the vast majority of people having problems. I know some of you are suggesting “just keep trying,” but I am someone that did ‘keep trying’ but mapped-out each and every action until I got it right. The steps are listed below. If you wanna listen to some Brit on YouTube or empty suggestions of “keep trying” from others, be my guest. I didn’t create this detailed process because I have no life. I’m married and attend law school. I did it because I know how much it sucks to have to figure it out on your own. It took me 26 hours to figure this out, so just take one hour to follow the process and you’ll save yourself 3 redbulls and 2 near-crying incidents.

    Here it is:

Note: This for for Vista Home Premium 64-bit Users

      To all people:
when describing what you have done to achieve your end goal – great – but pls DO remind everyone else WHAT the problem you tried to solve was.
Most of us seem to have different problems to start off with and it’s no good trying ALL these suggestions on each of our starting places, if you get my drift.

So kindly SET THE STAGE – start by describing your situation, i.e. Iphone “freezes” with usb/iTunes picture BECAUSE I installed i.e. VOIPOVER3G which made it reboot. This started my problem. I am unable to make Blackra1n work, i.e. “waiting for device” and nothing else happens.
THEN YOU HAVE SET THE STAGE FOR PEOPLE WHO CAN RELATE. THE ONES WHO CAN’T CAN MOVE ON TO SOMETHING THEY CAN RELATE THEIR PROBLEM TO.

      MY situation is:
Iphone “freezes” with usb/iTunes picture BECAUSE I installed i.e. VOIPOVER3G in Cydia which made it reboot. This started my problem. Since then I have had usb/iTunes and cannot turn ON my Iphone (hence a lot of above posts don’t apply to me and it would have been nice if everyone HAD SET THE STAGE). I am unable to make Blackra1n work, i.e. “waiting for device” and nothing else happens. Have tried many steps above, i.e. different usb ports, guest login, turn off-hold button, unblock blackra1n,m run as administrator etc.
I am running Vista home premium 32-bit. Have 3.1.2 JB and unlocked iphone 3gs 16gb AND nothing I have done can make this work. Been sitting over 8 hours with this issues yesterday and today, read up, trouble shooting, problem solving.
Close to throwing this crap of a device against the wall.

WHO WILL BE MY SAVIOR??? – reply to my post pls if you consider yourself the new Geohot wizzkid.

Well the third try it was able to actually proceed and install new firmware. However, during the final verification phase, it exits with an error (I forgot the error code), but the firmware gets installed anyhow.

  49. mrk says:

You totally rock! Thanks for the steps. Also, I did what Mike said.

    (Quoting:)
    blackra1n FIX!!!!!
    (/End Quote)

I did it for 14 seconds instead of 10. (Used my clock)… on 15 seconds the Apple Logo appears. It worked like magic… after 2 hours of pain.

    • J CAZ says:

Interesting twist, but I think this is only applicable to iPods.

  53. Jackson says:

ok so ive tried absolutely everything! ive got a 3gs 16gb on 3.1.2 which i updated to yesterday. ive factory reset my phone. ive tried everything.

when i open the blackra1n log it says

error:usb open failed while sending command
error:usb open failed while sending payload

I figure this is the problem.. all that happens is that i click make it ra1n and it goes into recovery, it says running and then it comes up saying done, wait for reboot. the phone just has a black, slighly illuminated screen.. when i reset it, there is no jailbreak.. please help!

  54. Jackson says:

ive tried for days using my vista computer and i couldnt get it to work.. i tried it once on an xp machine and it did it first go.. if you are having lots of problems please use an XP machine, ull save alot of hassle

when i use BlackRa1n it has entered my iPhone into Recovery mode, and now says “Running…” but nothing is happening and i still see the iTunes/USB Restore screen on my iPhone n i tryed so many times but the problem is same plz help me

  56. Tyler says:

Well I just used blackra1n from my macbook pro. couldnt get it to work.
    tried pwnagetool, no luck.
    took a break.
    came back to it.
read all the comments on this page.
    deleted blackra1n.
    restarted my computer.
    downloaded it again, restart again.
    turned the phone off.
    made it rain.
    it said waiting for device.
    I turned the phone on.
    it did its thing.
i held down home and power button.
    but not for very long.
it went to the frodo screen while i was holding them.
i quickly let go and let it do its thing.
fyi this was on my 3G.

I also hope it never takes this long to jailbreak my phone ever again. The two times i have done it before (2.2 and 3.0) it was flawless and effortless. This still has room for improvement.

Thanks for all the useful comments on this page!

blackra1n worked for me after about 25 tries over two days of various work arounds. I’m not sure if any of the above steps for disabling ituneshelper, appleservices, etc made a difference. The way I got it to work was to just keep hitting the makeitrain button while the phone rebooted to the apple logo everytime. Eventually it worked.

Wow, you literally saved my day…. I sort of gave up on jailbreaking a few months ago after wasting days on it. I kept getting stuck at the recovery mode… Then I tried what you suggested and BOOM! I finally saw GeoHot on my screen! I was about to go through the complete restore process if your suggestion didn’t work! Thank you so much!!!

I used to run blackra1n on my iTouch 2g 3.1.2 under WinXp. frodo apears,it reboots then never wakes up! iTunes detects my iPod in recovery mode. LibUsb detects it as Apple Mobile Device (DFU Mode). What i did already but failed:

    1. I click Restore, iTunes connects to server and gives me a 2.2.1 update instead of 3.1.2?
    2. I shift+click and browsed different custom firmwares that I downloaded but always give a 1601 error.
    3. Kill all ipod/itunes processes.
Hold both power & home buttons down for 10 seconds, and release power while still holding home until a beep sound because of a USB connection.
    4. Used iREB V3.1.2, still no display.

What else could i missed for my ipod to wake up?

The problem that I was facing: stuck in “waiting for device” screen.

  67. Leroy says:

I have tried many things, but one thing really worked, and I saw the Picture from geohot and it rebooted. This is what I had done:
Open Taks Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and kill the following processes if open: iTunesHelper.exe iTunes.exe, AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe, msdnresponder Ipodservice.exe.
I did this and everything went alright, so try this!
    Hope I helped.!

  76. sebastian says:

i had to re-jailbreak for reasons
and blackra1n said QTCF.dll was not found, then i followed the steps and it worked, thanks!

  77. Mr.Cummings says:

You dont need that qtcf.dll file. You dont have to push any buttons. You dont have to cancel any processes. Just close itunes after you restore and restart your phone before you jailbreak. Dont use compatibility mode. Placing the phone in airplane mode may have helped. Just plug your phone powered on and run blackra1ne as an administrator. I think the problem is that nobody is telling people to restart their phones after they restore.

    I use vista 32 bit

So check your OSX – it’s gotta be a current edition.

    • Nathan says:

See what “Gonzo” Says about my post below…

    • Sabrina says:

FYI…Blackra1n RC3 is a teathered jailbreak. You will ALWAYS have to run blackra1n again once you restart your phone. If you don’t want to keep jailbreaking it, don’t turn it off or let your phone battery die. Also, you DO NOT lose all your info when you run blackra1n again.

  101. Nathan says:

I have jailbroken about 4 phones successfully now using Blackra1n (all 8G), so firstly a BIG thanks!!

The last 2 Phones (Both 32G’s) I have tried, have both been unsuccessful in a sense.
I have downloaded David’s app, and ran that, and still no joy. Used Blackra1n in airplane mode, cancelled appsyn etc in device manager…

The problem is this: The actual Jail Break works fine. I syn my apps fine, they work fine.
AS SOON AS THE PHONE IS SWITCHED OFF, the Apple USB screen appears and the phone won’t boot, UNLESS I either restore or run Blackra1n. I redo the Blackra1n, then it loads. So basically its great until the phone dies, then I have to re-jailbreak to get it to load. Once I have done that, the phone works great, all apps are still there, etc, but its a pain to have to reuse Blackra1n everytime the phone is shut off…

    • Nathan says:

      No I haven’t fixed it yet…

      ANYONE HELP PLEASE!!!

    • Gonzo says:

man it’s normal for the new iphones 3GS, new generation. if your 6th and 7th number of IMEI (serial) code of iphone it’s more thant 41 I think, it’s half jailbreakable. Apple changed their boot system so you cant bot without plug it to the computer. Blackra1n RC3 (actual version) as to be launch everytime you want to turn on your iphone. Maybe it will change with the RC4 version to come…..someday….I hope. Had the same problem….

      • 1Lt says:

that’s a ‘tethered’ jailbreak. yeah, it kinda sux ’cause i had the same problem until my ipod started to act up. geohot said that if he won this competition of finding these red ballons (i think) he would make a fix for this, but i’m not sure if he did..

  102. 1Lt says:

well, i did the helper thing, but i have a big problem. when it’s about to restart (geohot’s face is the background, and in the foreground, there is the loading icon) the screen goes black, and i can’t do ANYHTING. I tried the power/home button combo. i tried it a bunch, and it doesn’t seem to work, and the only way to get it to function again would be to restore it from itunes… any comments? thanks for any assistance!

Hi All, clearly there is an issue with the 3.1.2 firmware. People stating “You are an idiot because you cant get it working” do not help the situation. I have the same issue as some have stated. The phone reboots with the picture on screen comes into the OS but no application icon is installed. I have tried on a mac book and also on windows xp. Same thing. I am running 3,1,2 (7D11) and modem fw 05.11.07. The screen on blackra1n states “done, wait for reboot” and nothing else. iTunes is not running (I have tried it while it is running also).

everyone heres a guaranteed work for anyone with an IPod Touch 3g.

THIS IS ONLY TESTED ON IPOD TOUCH 3G ON WINDOWS XP OR VISTA. NOT GUARANTED WORK FOR MAC OR ANY OTHER IPOD DEVICES.

firstly, the reason why blackra1n is not working for most people is because of the 3.1.3 update. however there is a way to downgrade to 3.1.2 to use blackra1n and jailbreak your device again.

go on google and search iPod2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw

after you’ve downloaded it, set your plug in your device and open Itunes. then set your ipod touch in DEF mode by holding the home and power button until you hear a sound your computer makes. when you hear the sound release the power button while still holding the home button until you recieve an restore notice from Itunes.

DO NOT HIT THE RESTORE BUTTON YET. when itunes gives you that pop up saying “Itunes has detected an ipod that needs to be restored before used with Itunes”, click ok but do not restore yet.

locate where you saved your iPod2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw . then hold shift and press the restore button in itunes at the same time, this should allow you to browse ipod updates. locate the ipod2 file and open it, this will trick apple into thinking you’re updating to 3.1.2 from 3.1.1, however what you’re really doing is down grading it from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2. after the restore is done and your device says the version number is 3.1.2., jailbreak with blackra1n.

    3. I run it again(due to the fact im tethered)
    4. It syncs to itunes, i check my ipod for blackra1n
    5. It’s not there, in other words for some strange reason it didnt work, HELP ANYBODY PLZ!!!

    • Tony says:

well first try disabling auto-syncing your device with Itunes in the settings.

      -directions in posts above^^^^^-

if that doesn’t work try just running blackra1n once and don’t run it twice, it usually boots itself twice.

also u could try to restore it again to 3.1.2. even if u already did it.

im no developer or anything, im just suggesting things i’ve tried and it works now for me.

    • Sabrina says:

Did you run Blackra1n again? You have to run Blackra1n EVERY time your turn off/reboot your phone. It’s a teathered jailbreak and you’ll have to do this everytime until they come up with a fix for it. Just make sure you’re near a computer if you are going to reboot it so you can run blackra1n again. You WON’t lose all your info/apps etc.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

  130. Greg says:

I tried all the solutions written here and on other websites. My iphone kept rebooting and blackra1n would not set up anymore.
    I have a latest iphone 3GS.

I eventually realised that my firmware had been upgraded to 3.1.3 from 3.1.2 though I had set up itunes not to perfom any upgrade.

So after spending 2 days trying the all reboot stuff, I just performed a downgrade back to 3.1.2 using the following steps: http://www.saurik.com/id/12#howto
Then I got back all the itunes apps from the itunes backup and rehacked it using blackra1n, which worked perfectly (no need to close itunes or whatsoever in my case).
All the applications’ signatures from Cydia and Rock are still on the iphone, and Rock actually had a backup of my applications (winterboard, etc..) so I could reinstall all in less than one hour.

I was afraid to lose all data and applications (it took me quite a while to configure it all) and therefore was avoiding the restore, but eventually this was much faster than trying to reboot for 50 or more times with the different methods.

  131. Jeremy says:

Ran Blackra1n, got a black iPod screen, I closed Blackra1n, ran it a second time while the iPod was on the black screen and it worked.

hey guys, i have 3gs white 16gb and my phone was bricked for around 3 times, and 3 times i fix it but i dont know how, this is what i been doing

    step1 run blackrain
    step2 stuck on running mode
    step3 unplug usb
    step4 turn off phone
    step5 turn on phone
    step6 plug usb
and blackrain will auto try to run again

if this fails, during step4 try to hold both power and home button til the phone comes on then skip step5 and go on with step6

i hope this helps, i have also tried for over 100times and it seems i get randomly, first time i unbrick was really quick it look around 4 hours then 2nd and 3rd time took me 2 days

  134. DoubleX says:

ok guys i just bricked my phone again for the 4th time (lol) and this time i got it unlocked in under 1hour

i did all of the above and after blackrain will auto try to run again:

    pull out usb
    restart phone again
    close blackrain
run blackrain and make it rain
plug usb back with the phone on

i did this under window 92 mode using run admin

hope this helps, i really feel bad about those unlucky ones.

Tyler – do this – go to C:/Program files/Common files/Apple/Apple applicaton support. Look for the ASL.DLL file – right click on it and select “open with” – then browse to where Blackrain is and click open/okay. Blackrain should now work fine.

I also tried the recovery loop fix with no sucess.

I could “restore” but then 3.1.3 automatically would be installed and I would be pwnd by that because I do not just need a jailbreak but a carrier unlock also. Help please!

my phone is only half jailbroken before, means its the type where i shut it down and it will lock it self again, so i used blackra1n in the past before, then i tried using spirit, which people said it will fully jailbreak your phone, and ran it with my phone already jailbroken on 3.1.2 and when it reboot nothing happen, got the itune screen and spirit isnt working anymore, so it takes me to my problem on top, used blackra1n and did not work like it is suppose to.

I found this out because I turned off a bunch of services to make my startup faster, then i couldnt jailbreak anymore so viola.

I’ve been running an iphone 3GS with firmware 3.1.2. jailbroken with blackrain and unlocked for quite a while now and its been working great.

My phone suddenly jammed today, and i turned it off and went to reboot (by plugging into the usb port and clicking make it rain). The guys face comes up but then it seems to jam, and doesnt get past this point. IT then slips back into recovery mode with the apple symbol and the connect to itunes symbol and blackrain automatically tries to jailbreak it again. This cycle repeats itself indefinately.

When i try to restore it via itunes (version 9 i get an error message which is something along the lines of “The iPhone could not be restored because the device isnt eligible for the requested build”.
    I tried following this advice
“In windows go to start –>run–>%appdata%
Open “apple computer” open “itunes” check for folder named “device support”
If folder exists, delete any contents inside, if folder does not exist, create it. Make sure you empty recycle bin.
Connect iphone to computer and put iphone in DFU mode. Once you see it pop up in itunes, hold shift and click restore. Locate your custom firmware.

However when i go to locate custom firmware its looking for an *ipsw file. I tried changing the blackrain.exe file to blackrain.ipsw however it said it didnt recognise this as a firmware file.

Any help on how to resolve this, or any other way of fixing it would be greatly appreciated
